The Fantastic Four are finally making their grand entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans couldn’t be more excited. With ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ set to premiere in July 2025, Marvel is bringing the family home.
One of the most exciting aspects of the recently released teaser trailer is how it hints at the team’s transformation into superheroes. The first teaser for the film strongly suggests that we will at least get glimpses of how the Fantastic Four got their powers.
The Story Of How The Fantastic Four Was Formed In Marvel Comics
The Fantastic Four first appeared in Marvel Comics’ ‘Fantastic Four #1’, created by the legendary Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. So, their origin is deeply rooted in the Space Race era. This makes them one of the most iconic superhero teams of all time. Moreover, in the comics, Reed Richards, a brilliant scientist, builds a spacecraft to explore the cosmos.
Along with his best friend Ben Grimm, his fiancée Sue Storm, and her hot-headed younger brother Johnny Storm, Reed embarks on a daring mission to beat the Soviets in the race for space exploration. However, things take a dramatic turn when their spacecraft is unexpectedly hit by intense cosmic rays.
Upon their return to Earth, the four astronauts realize they have been permanently changed. Their bodies have absorbed the cosmic radiation, altering their DNA and granting them unique superhuman abilities. Reed Richards gains plasticity-based powers, allowing him to stretch his body to incredible lengths. Sue Storm develops the power of invisibility.
Whereas, Johnny Becomes capable of controlling and generating fire. Additionally, Ben Grimm undergoes the most drastic transformation, turning into a powerful, rock-like being with near-invincibility. This backstory has remained largely unchanged in Marvel Comics for over 60 years. Now, with the first teaser for ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ it appears that Marvel Studios is keeping things faithful to this classic origin.
MCU Trailer Remains Faithful To The Family
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously stated that the film would not be a traditional origin story. However, the trailer seems way too familiar to the comics. It looks like their origin will closely follow their classic Marvel Comics backstory.

While ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ won’t be a full-fledged origin story, the first teaser trailer has already given fans a peek at both their pre-superpower lives and their transformed superhero selves. This strongly suggests that we will get to see how they gained their powers.
Additionally, in the trailer, we see the Fantastic Four’s spaceship taking off into space. This is a huge nod to their comic book origin, as it implies they will indeed travel into space and be exposed to cosmic rays, just like in the comics. Moreover, just like in the comics, the teaser showcases Johnny Storm bursting into flames mid-air.
Sue Storm showcases her invisibility and force field abilities. Whereas, Ben Grimm’s rock-like form is revealed, marking his evolution into the indestructible Thing. However, Reed Richards’ stretching abilities are not fully revealed yet, possibly being saved for a big cinematic moment in the film.
