The summer of 2023 will witness one of the biggest cinematic releases of the year in terms of scale, storytelling, and star power. In July 2023, the three biggest films of the year will be released at the box office: “Oppenheimer,’ ‘Barbie,’ and ‘Mission Impossible 7.’ Though ‘Barbie’ is not that big on the scale, Greta Gerwig’s storytelling and Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie’s star power will be enough reasons to compete at the box office.
‘Barbie’ is a tale of Margot Robbie’s titular character existing in a perfect world and leading a perfect life. In her world, she can fly off the roof; she has perfect heels, but until the existential crisis hits her. Due to this, she enters the real human world for an adventure, and Ryan Gosling’s Ken stands with her through it. However, Margot was not the first choice for the film. In 2016, when Sony Pictures had the right to make the film, they approached Amy Schumer, but she exited the film.

Amy Schumer Admits That The Script Was Different When She Came On Board
Margot Robbie was not the first choice, and Greta Gerwig was not even on board when Amy Schumer was approached for ‘Barbie.’ In 2016, when Sony Pictures had the rights to the film, they hired Hilary Winston as a screenplay writer to conceive the script and cast the comedian. However, within a year, Amy Schumer left the film. During that time, she cited the reason that she was exiting the film due to ‘scheduling conflicts.’
Amy Schumer said, “Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”However, in 2023, the ‘Trainwreck’ actress gave the true reason for her exit from the film.
During ‘Watch What Happens Live’ with Andy Cohen, Amy Schumer said, “I can’t wait to see the [Margot Robbie] movie, it looks awesome. I think we said it was scheduling conflicts, that’s what we said. But yeah, it really was just creative differences. But you know, there’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool so I will be seeing the movie.”

Greta Gerwig Thought The Film Would Have Been A Career Ender For Her
Later, Margot Robbie secured the rights from Mattel and got Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to pen the script. Now, one can trace Greta Gerwig’s vision with the little hints in the trailer. The indie filmmaker was apprehensive after delivering feminist dramas like ‘Little Women’ and ‘Lady Bird.’
During Dua Lipa‘s ‘At Your Service’ podcast, Greta Gerwig admitted that she felt terror when Robbie offered her the film. She said, “It was something that was exciting, so I had that terror. There’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, well, anything’s possible.”
She continued, “I had what felt like vertigo when starting to write it, like, where do you even begin? What would be the story? I knew that it would be really interesting terror. Usually, that’s where the best stuff is. Anything where I’m like this could be a career ender – I probably should do it.”
