‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ And ‘Black Adam’ Unlikely To Be Released In China

There are fewer Hollywood films entering Chinese theatres these days. This is due to the stringent censorship policies and nearly three years of COVID-zero policies. Even the biggest hits of the second latter of 2022, Disney’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and Warner Bros’ ‘Black Adam’ are facing restrictions. It is unlikely that these movies are released in China.

The country is the second-largest theatrical market in the world. The movies being blocked from release are costing the studios tens and thousands of millions. These recent years there had been much less for Hollywood to offer to the country. Here is the reason why the biggest hit superhero films are being restricted in China.

Dwayne Johnson’s movies have done pretty well in China. ‘Skyscraper‘ earned $98 million in China, while Hobbs & Shaw got a box office hit of $201 million. Thus ‘Black Adam’ was expected to gross much more from the Chinese market. Beijing regulators do not usually explain the reason why they are banning foreign movies. It is from several sources working in the industry that the conclusion is made by The Hollywood Reporter that the DC movie will not hit theatres.

There are speculations as to why there is a ban on ‘Black Adam’. Pierce Brosnan appears in the movie with the heroic title of Kent Nelson or Doctor Fate. About two years ago, the actor posted on Instagram a 19-year-old photo of his family posing with the Dalai Lama. He also offered congratulations to the spiritual leader on his 85th birthday in the captions. It is the support shown to the Tibetan leader that has likely led to the ban.

Marvel movies are not new to the restrictions in the Chinese theatre. ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘ and ‘Eternals‘ had all faced such restrictions. It is believed that the reasons for the restriction on ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is similar to why Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder‘ and Pixar’s ‘Lightyear‘ were banned. That is a brief description of openly gay characters. In ‘Black Panther’, the Wakandan warrior Aneka and the Dora bodyguard Ayo are shown to be in a relationship. Usually, studios scrap off these scenes so they are approved in foreign markets. But Disney has recently taken the stance that they won’t be removing the gay scenes to appease the foreign censor boards.
