The final act of ‘Scream‘ looks thrilling on screen, packed with chaos, reveals, and nonstop action. But for Courteney Cox, filming that now-iconic ending was anything but glamorous.

While fans remember the suspense, Cox remembers the physical toll. She has openly admitted that the hardest part of filming Scream was surviving that marathon finale, a sequence that demanded weeks of stunt work, sticky fake blood, and serious endurance.

When ‘Scream‘ premiered in 1996, it quickly became a landmark in horror cinema. The film delivered classic slasher suspense within a murder-mystery framework, earning rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Alongside Neve Campbell and David Arquette, Courteney Cox took on one of the franchise’s three leading roles as Gale Weathers, a determined reporter who often found herself in dangerous situations.

During an appearance on First We Feast alongside host Sean Evans, Cox addressed long-standing talk about the film’s exhausting final act. Evans asked whether the ending truly represented the most demanding part of production. Cox confirmed that it absolutely did.

Cast and crew referred to the climactic party sequence as “Scene 118.” The finished scene runs about 42 minutes, yet production took 21 full days to complete. Over time, the team jokingly labeled it the longest night in horror history. For Cox, those three weeks turned into the most physically grueling stretch of the entire shoot.

Naturally, much of that strain came from the stunt work. Cox performed her own stunts throughout the chaotic finale, which meant constant movement, falls, and physical confrontation. She admitted, “Oh yeah, it’s hard. You do all those stunts, and you have blood, and it’s sticky and, anyway, yes, it’s really hard to do the finales of these.”

She was much younger at the time and approached the stunt work confidently. At that stage in her career, she believed she could handle anything without consequence. Cox did complete all the action required, but she later admitted that she paid for it physically once filming wrapped.

Despite describing the original finale as the hardest part of filming ‘Scream‘, Cox’s commitment to Gale Weathers remains strong. In fact, her connection to the character has only deepened as the franchise has continued.
