Drew Barrymore has an idea for the ‘Scream‘ films that could bring her character, Casey Becker, back in a new way. The 51-year-old, who played the teenage girl killed in the famous opening scene of ‘Scream‘ 30 years ago, spoke about it during a recent episode of her talk show.
During a conversation with her horror co-star, Laurie Metcalf, who recently returned in the latest instalment, Barrymore was asked if she would ever return to the role that made her a horror icon in 1996.
Drew Barrymore’s Pitch for Casey Becker’s Return

Barrymore has now shared exactly how she thinks Becker could return to the ‘Scream‘ universe. “People say, ‘Will you ever come back?’ And I say, ‘I’m not sure how,’” she admitted on The Drew Barrymore Show.

Then she shared her idea, saying, “Casey Becker, I think you could do an origin story for anything. And I think that’s how you go in there.”
Why an Origin Story Could Revive Casey Becker

Drew Barrymore’s idea comes at a time when fans have been talking about old characters returning to the long-running horror franchise. Casey’s death in the first film was brutal and final, so bringing her back in the present timeline would be difficult.

An origin story could instead show her life before the events of the film. It could explore her family, her past, or what her life was like before that night.
Drew Barrymore’s Longstanding Love for the ‘Scream’ Role

Barrymore has repeatedly shown affection for her ‘Scream‘ legacy. In 2023, she joked on her show that surviving her own C-section made her believe “maybe Casey Becker will be okay.”
“It’s funny. I’ve never thought of it this way, but I’m pretty sure a C-section is comparable to what happened to her,” she said at that time. “Like, literally. And I’m here! I’m fine! So, maybe Casey Becker will be okay.” She added, “With good writing, you can make anything happen.“
She also briefly brought the character back in a fun sketch in 2020, complete with the same hairstyle, acting as if nothing had happened.
Fans have long wanted to see Casey again, even though her death became one of the most memorable moments in horror. Barrymore did not confirm if she would play the role in such a story, but hinted that a younger actor could take on the part if the idea moves forward.
