Winning an Oscar usually goes hand in hand with being a huge hit, but that’s not always the case. Over the years, several movies surprised everyone by taking home Academy Awards despite mixed reviews, tough competition, or simply flying under the radar.
Some won for groundbreaking visual effects, while others earned recognition for makeup, sound, or unforgettable screenplays. Think you know every Oscar winner? These films might just surprise you!
1. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)

Many believe ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark‘ should have won Best Picture, but that honor went to ‘Chariots of Fire‘. Even so, Indiana Jones didn’t leave empty-handed.
The movie collected five awards, including Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and a Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing. Not bad for a film that changed adventure movies forever!

2. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)

Try spotting where the CGI begins on Davy Jones. It’s almost impossible! That’s exactly why Dead Man’s Chest won Best Visual Effects. The filmmakers created the unforgettable pirate captain with moving tentacles and incredibly realistic facial expressions.
They also unleashed the giant Kraken, making every sea battle unforgettable. The Oscar-winning visual effects still hold up amazingly well today.
3. Suicide Squad (2016)

The battle between the MCU and the DC almost never ends. Across aspects ranging from storyline to cinematography, the unrevealed elements consistently competed with one another. So it was shocking when ‘Suicide Squad‘ was awarded the prestigious Academy Award.
But later, ‘Black Panther‘ won three Awards in 2018. ‘Suicide Squad‘ scored a totally unexpected Oscar win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It was surprising to see it defeat Star Trek Beyond in the category, especially since critics poorly received almost every aspect of ‘Suicide Squad‘.
4. Pearl Harbor (2001)

Not every Oscar winner is a critic’s favorite. ‘Pearl Harbor‘ received mixed reviews and even picked up several Razzie nominations, yet it still won Best Sound Editing. The Academy recognized the incredible work behind its explosive battle scenes, roaring aircraft, and realistic war sounds.
The film also earned nominations for Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song, proving its technical achievements were far stronger than its reviews suggested.

5. Ex Machina (2014)

David really did beat Goliath here. Made on a tiny $15 million budget, ‘Ex Machina‘ stunned Hollywood by winning Best Visual Effects over massive blockbusters like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘, and ‘The Martian‘.
Instead of giant explosions, the movie impressed voters with Ava, a beautifully designed humanoid robot whose transparent mechanical body blended seamlessly with live-action footage. Sometimes, less really is more.
6. Purple Rain (1984)

A music superstar steps onto the Oscar stage wearing a sparkling purple hooded cloak. That was Prince after ‘Purple Rain‘ won Best Original Song Score. Many expected more traditional musicals to win, making this victory a huge surprise.
The film’s bold rock and pop soundtrack stood out from the usual orchestral winners. Prince then gave one of the shortest acceptance speeches ever, quietly saying, “This is very unbelievable, I could have never imagined this in my wildest dreams.”
7. The Exorcist (1973)

Believe it or not, horror movies rarely win Oscars. That’s what made ‘The Exorcist‘s success so special. While it became the first horror film nominated for Best Picture, it unexpectedly won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.
William Peter Blatty’s script proved horror could tell a powerful story, while the chilling voices and eerie sound effects turned every scene into nightmare fuel.
8. The Golden Compass (2007)

When the envelope opened, almost everyone expected ‘Transformers or Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End‘ to take home Best Visual Effects. Instead, ‘The Golden Compass‘ pulled off one of the biggest Oscar surprises ever.
Its effects team created more than 1,200 stunning visual effects shots, including lifelike armored polar bears and magical animal companions called daemons. Even though the movie earned mixed reviews, its breathtaking visuals impressed Academy voters enough to earn the golden statue.
9. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘ remains the only movie in its franchise to win Academy Awards. It dominated the technical categories with victories for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Makeup.
From the liquid-metal T-1000 to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s battle-damaged cyborg, nearly every effect looked years ahead of its time. No wonder it’s still considered a visual masterpiece.
10. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Ever forgotten Robin Williams was hiding under all that makeup? You’re not alone! ‘Mrs. Doubtfire‘ surprised everyone by winning Best Makeup against serious Oscar contenders like ‘Schindler’s List and Philadelphia‘.
The talented makeup artists spent hours transforming Williams into the lovable British nanny, creating one of cinema’s most convincing disguises. It’s proof that comedy can sometimes beat drama when the craftsmanship is truly exceptional.
