Years after ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘ introduced audiences to Padma Patil, actress Afshan Azad is opening up about a part of the franchise that continues to spark debate among fans.
The Patil twins’ iconic Yule Ball scene has long been criticized for its styling. Now, Azad has revealed that it’s more than that.
Afshan Azad Says ‘Harry Potter’s Yule Ball Left a Lasting Impact On Her

The actress spoke candidly in a video on social media about her recollections of shooting the scene, and how it impacted her as a teenager playing one of the world’s largest film franchises. The Yule Ball is one of the most iconic scenes in the Harry Potter saga.
However, for some of the fans, the Yule Ball outfits for Padma and Parvati Patil are not looking so good. There have been criticisms that the films failed to do justice to the true representation of South Asian fashion and culture. It seems as if Azad is in accord with many of those criticisms.
“There is so much conversation out there about that outfit, and I laugh at all of them because you guys don’t understand what I went through on this film,” she said. She called it “one of the worst Asian outfits I’ve ever seen on film or TV. Now that I’m older and I’ve got a voice, I can actually say it.”
Reflecting on the outfit she wore in the film, she admitted she now struggles to understand some of the creative decisions behind the design. The image again evoked strong emotions and triggered memories of a time in her life that she now sees very differently. Social media users have been mocking the costume and demanding “justice for the Patil twins” for years. Though many of the memes make her laugh, Azad feels that fans were never told the whole story of what was going on off-camera.

The most emotional aspect of Azad’s reflection was the influence that the experience had on her confidence. The actress said she had been made to feel much bigger than she was at 16 when she interacted with a member of the costume department.

“The costume designer woman, she made me feel like I was the biggest girl on the planet,” she said. But today, Azad has a different perspective. Instead of criticizing her younger self for what she didn’t do, she sees her as being brave and tough enough to be in such a big franchise at such a young age.
Her remarks also come as excitement mounts for HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ TV show. Azad said that representation has come a long way since ‘Goblet of Fire‘ came out and wondered what would happen to the Patil twins when the new series finally gets to the Yule Ball story. There’s one thing for sure: fans will be watching closely and so will she.
