“I Did Stupid Stuff”: Sylvester Stallone Looks Back On A Bad Stunt Decision On The ‘Expendables’ Set
Sylvester Stallone told the viewers of ‘The Family Stallone’ about the aftermath of a stunt gone awry during the filming of the first ‘Expendables’ movie. The 77-year-old Hollywood icon can be seen racing for his seventh back surgery on the latest episode of the show. The injury being operated on here stems from 2010 when a stunt with WWE legend Steve Austin went horribly wrong.
Speaking about the incident on the Paramount+ reality series, Stallone said, “I did stupid stuff. I was directing Expendables, and, like an idiot, I’m doing take 10, take whatever, and I remember one slam, and I could actually feel one bang.” Stallone ended up dislocating his shoulders and fracturing his neck when Austin body-slammed him against a stone wall.
“Steve knew,” Stallone said, adding, “I never recovered from [Expendables]. After that film, it was never physically the same. So I warn people, ‘Don’t do your own stunts.’”

“It’s Very Scary For Our Family”: Stallone Family Recalls Seeing The Actor In Pain
Since he suffered the injuries, Stallone has powered through the pain with metal plate inserted into his neck and by undergoing spinal fusions. However, the toll it took on his physical well-being has been lasting, leading to a total of seven surgeries.
Stallone’s wife, Jennifer Flavin, also shared her insights about the incident from family’s perspective. Recalling the ordeal, she described it as a “scary time” for the family. “He doesn’t like people to know he’s had so many back surgeries,” Flavin said.
“It’s very scary for our family every time Sly has to go through surgery, because you never know…no one knows,” she added.
“It’s really hard to see my father go through yet another painful operation,” one of Stallone’s three daughters, Scarlet added. “My whole childhood, he was in pain. He did everything he could to push through the pain and be present, but I couldn’t imagine every waking moment you are just hurting,” she added.
Stallone however made a quick recovery on the show. “I hope this is the one to help him live a more comfortable life,” Flavin said.
