‘It Ends With Us‘ is a bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover that tells the story of Lily Bloom, a young woman who falls in love with a neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, but also has to deal with the memories of her first love, Atlas, and the abuse she witnessed in her childhood. The TikTok sensation has recently been adapted into a movie by 87North Productions, the company behind action films such as John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Nobody.
The screenplay will be written by Hoover herself, along with Tia Williams. Blake Lively is set to take the screen as Lily Bloom opposite to Brandon Skelnar as Atlas. The book has been praised for its realistic and emotional portrayal of domestic violence and its impact on the victims and their families. But is the novel based on a true story? Here’s what we know.

Is It Based On A True Story?
Sadly, yes. In a very touching author’s note at the end of the book, Colleen Hoover describes how her own experience with domestic violence shaped the story. It Ends with Us tells the story of her own mother, and how her choice to leave Hoover’s abusive father when she was three protected her relationship with him. Hoover pays homage to her mother by having Lily mirror her path in the book. If this sounds simplistic and possibly wrong, I urge you to read the book first.
Hoover also reveals that some of the scenes in the book are based on real events that happened to her or people she knows, such as the scene where Lily finds Atlas sleeping in an abandoned house, or the scene where Ryle hits Lily with a book. While writing the book proved therapeutic for her, it was also challenging and painful. She hopes that the book will help readers understand the complexity of abusive relationships and the courage it takes to break free from them.
