When Jennifer Lawrence signed on to play Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games’, she knew she was taking on one of the most beloved heroines in modern literary fiction. But with that role came immense pressure to fit Hollywood’s expectations of what a female action star should look like.

She wasn’t just portraying a character but also changing how fierce women are seen on screen. Of course, the industry’s double standards called for slimming down of her body, but Lawrence refused it all in order to carry a responsibility that goes far beyond a single movie.

Looking back on ‘The Hunger Games’ during Variety’s Actors on Actors, Jennifer Lawrence revealed that one dominant discussion surrounding the film had nothing to do with stunts. As a woman, the main concern was her weight.

“I remember the biggest conversation, of course, this was pre-Me Too, and I’m a woman, so it was weight and how much weight are you gonna lose? Well, it’s called ‘The Hunger Games’,” Lawrence said.

At the time, Lawrence was just 20 years old. She rejected the idea of forcing herself onto a restrictive diet simply to meet Hollywood’s standards. More importantly, she couldn’t ignore the impact Katniss would have on millions of young viewers.

“I don’t know if I want all of the girls who are going to dress up as Katniss to feel like they can’t because they’re not a certain weight,” she explained, adding that she also refused to let those expectations affect the way she viewed herself.

The Philosophy That Guided Jennifer Lawrence From The Start

This conversation was there since the film’s release. Because Katniss came from District 12 and endured poverty and hunger, many argued that the character should have been much thinner. Lawrence, however, had opposed that line of thinking from the very beginning.

In a 2013 interview with SciFiNow, she explained why this philosophy was so important to her portrayal of the character: “We have control over this image; we have control over this role model. Why would we make her something unobtainable and thin? This is a person that young girls—well, all women, but mainly young girls—will be looking up to and are going to want to look like her, and we have control over it, so why not make her strong? Why not make her beautiful and healthy and fit?”

Lawrence argued that the entertainment industry doesn’t take enough responsibility for the unrealistic expectations it creates. She refused to contribute to that culture by turning Katniss into just another example of unattainable beauty standard.

Jennifer Lawrence’s commitment to this philosophy went beyond just promoting a healthy body image. She also saw ‘The Hunger Games’ as an opportunity to challenge Hollywood’s long-standing belief that female-led action movies couldn’t succeed.

“I remember when I was doing ‘The Hunger Games’, nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie because it wouldn’t work,” Lawrence recalled. “We were told girls and boys can both identify with a male lead, but boys cannot identify with a female lead.”

The enormous success of ‘The Hunger Games’ completely dismantled that assumption and helped pave the way for more female-led blockbusters.

She continued, “And it just makes me so happy every single time I see a movie come out that just blows through every single one of those beliefs, and proves that it is just a lie to keep certain people out of the movies. To keep certain people in the same positions that they’ve always been in.”

For Jennifer Lawrence, refusing to lose weight was essential to portraying Katniss as a realistic, healthy, and capable heroine. She wasn’t just protecting her own well-being. She wanted one of the most influential female protagonists of her generation to be a role model that young audiences could admire without feeling they had to change themselves to look like her.
