The trend of continuing the story of movies and creating a whole universe out of it is very common in Hollywood, especially superhero franchises like Marvel and DCU are the masters in this field. But the director who crafted films like ‘Indian Jones 5’ and ‘Logan’, James Mangold thinks otherwise.
Mangold is not a fan of multi-movie universe-building. This also answers why he isn’t interested in working with Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. Mangold affirms that he’s always approached standalone films.

James Mangold Is Not A Fan Of Multi-Universe Building Films
During an interview with Rolling Stone, James Mangold shared that he’s more interested in doing standalone films than multiverse movies. The director said, “I don’t do multiverses.” He’s currently directing Bob Dylan’s biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ starring Timothee Chalamet as the music icon.
Mangold directed Joaquin Phoenix to an Oscar nomination as Cash in 2005’s ‘Walk The Line’ and fans hoped that he would cast him in ‘A Complete Unknown’ but Mangold didn’t want any crossovers between the musical biopics and cast his ‘Indiana Jones 5’ star Boyd Holbrook as Cash instead.
He also added, “For me, the goal becomes, always, ‘What is unique about this film, and these characters?’ Not making you think about some other movie or some Easter egg or something else, which is all an intellectual act, not an emotional act. You want the movie to work on an emotional level.”

James Mangold Is Not Interested In Crafting Spin-Off Movies
Mangold continued during the same interview, “It’s weird that I’ve even worked in the world of IP entertainment because I don’t like multi-movie universe-building. It’s the enemy of storytelling. The death of storytelling. It’s more interesting to people the way the Legos connect than the way the story works in front of us.”
Moreover, he also spoke to Variety last year ahead of the release of ‘Indiana Jones 5′ where he bluntly added that he’s “not interested” in working with any spin-off films.
He feels that at a certain point, these kinds of movies became a source of mere advertisement as they keep fans engaged with searching for Easter eggs and they start making conspiracies out of anything. But Mangold isn’t staying away from the Hollywood franchise either. He’s currently involved ‘Star Wars’ franchise.
