    In homage to the action heroes of 1930s film serials, George Lucas created the character Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr. who is also known as Indy. He was named after George’s dog, a large Alaska Malamute. She became very important to him and George paid her homage by including her in some way in his films.

    In the film ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark‘, in 1981, the character featured for the first time. In 1984, ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom‘ followed and then 1989 saw the ‘Last Crusade‘. From 1992 to 1996, the character also appeared in an American television series ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles‘. In 2008, the character again featured in the film ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull‘ to be followed by 2023 ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘.

    The character is not only featured in movies and television shows, but has also appeared in some novels, video games, comics, and more. Jones has inspired various Disney theme park attractions like Indiana Jones et le Temple du Peril, Epic Stunt Spectacular, and more.

    Jones’ character is known for his sense of humor, and knowledge of old civilizations and languages. But he also has a fear of snakes. In 2003, the character ranked as the second-greatest film hero of all time by the American Film Institute.

    The franchise has five films

    The first film of the franchise was released on June 12, 1981, and collected $389.9 million at the box office. In 1984, the second film of the franchise, titled ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom‘ was released and it collected $333.1 million at the box office. However, it met with some controversies for its wrong depiction of Indian culture leading to its ban in India.

    The third film of this franchise was released on May 24, 1989, and collected $474.2 million at the box office followed by the fourth film in 2008 which collected $790.7 million. The latest film of the franchise, ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny‘ released recently on June 30, 2023. All the films feature Harrison Ford in the lead role. The first four installments have been directed by Steven Spielberg while the fifth was helmed by James Mangold.
