Long before Robert Pattinson’s name became synonymous with Edward Cullen, ‘Twilight’ author Stephenie Meyer already had her vision for the brooding vampire. In fact, she often used her blog to share her ideas for the film.
In it, she once revealed why Henry Cavill was her “perfect Edward”. Though that never made its way to the screen, the story behind it is just hilariously interesting.
The Many Visions Stephenie Meyer Had For Henry Cavill In ‘Twilight’
In 2007, while communicating with fans, Meyer revealed some of the actors she had imagined playing her character. At the very top of this list was Henry Cavill as Edward Cullen. Except there was one major problem.

At the time, Cavill was 24. Meanwhile, Edward, who is actually around 104 years old, is supposed to look like a high-schooler. Ironically, Robert Pattinson was around 22 years old when he was in the first ‘Twilight’ movie.
As disappointing as it was, Meyer didn’t get to have her “perfect Edward”, though that didn’t stop her from thinking of more visions for Cavill. In the same blog, she also floated another possibility: Carlisle Cullen, Edward’s adoptive father and the respected doctor of Forks.
It is easy to understand why Meyer saw Cavill as Edward. Along with having those Greek god visuals, Cavill can pull off a striking, brooding hero face. But at the same time, Cavill does have a mature, distinguished presence, which will make him perfect for Carlisle.
Why Cavill Never Made His Way To The ‘Twilight’ Franchise
As interesting as these casting ideas were, Henry Cavill never found his way to Forks. The irony is that Cavill apparently didn’t even know he was in consideration. The actor explained that because the internet worked very differently back then and also because he was a relatively new actor, he never got the news.

In hindsight, that worked perfectly, because Cavill didn’t view losing the role to Pattinson as a missed opportunity. He explained that because he never even realized that the opportunity existed, he had no hard feelings.
However, the two actors did compete for another major YA franchise role. Once, Cavill revealed that he auditioned for the role of Cedric Diggory in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’. But even this time, Pattinson went for the win.
The shared history between these two British actors is simply amusing. And though Cavill lost both the roles, we can’t help but imagine what would have been his take on two of the most popular YA franchises of all time.
