Robert’s Rebellion is one of the defining events in ‘Game of Thrones’ history, but beneath the battles and political betrayals was a deeply personal tragedy that changed Westeros forever.
Robert’s Rebellion Wasn’t Really About The Iron Throne
It all began with Lyanna Stark. Betrothed to Robert Baratheon, she disappeared with Prince Rhaegar Targaryen after the Tourney at Harrenhal. Robert believed Rhaegar had kidnapped the woman he loved, giving him a reason to rise against the Targaryen dynasty.

Lyanna’s brother Brandon traveled to King’s Landing to demand answers, only to be arrested by Aerys II, the Mad King. Brandon and his father, Rickard Stark, were brutally executed. Aerys then demanded that Jon Arryn surrender Robert and Ned Stark. Jon refused.
That decision became the spark for rebellion. Robert, Ned, and Jon Arryn gathered powerful allies, and the war eventually reached its decisive confrontation at the Trident. There, Robert personally faced Rhaegar and killed him with his warhammer.
Tywin Lannister had remained neutral throughout much of the conflict, waiting to see which side would emerge victorious. Once it became clear that Robert was winning, Tywin marched on King’s Landing. Aerys mistakenly believed the Lannisters had come to defend him.
Instead, they sacked the city. The Mad King ordered Jaime Lannister to ignite the wildfire hidden throughout King’s Landing, intending to destroy the capital rather than surrender it. Jaime killed Aerys and stopped the massacre, earning the infamous nickname “Kingslayer.”
During the chaos, Rhaegar’s wife Elia Martell and her children, Rhaenys and Aegon, were murdered. Viserys and Daenerys escaped, leaving the Targaryen dynasty shattered. Robert became king and later married Cersei Lannister. On the surface, the rebellion had succeeded.
The Secret That Changed Everything About The Rebellion
But the truth about Lyanna changed the meaning of the entire war. Ned eventually reached the Tower of Joy, where he found his dying sister. Before her death, Lyanna entrusted him with a secret that he protected for years.

Rhaegar may not have abducted Lyanna. They may have loved each other. That possibility transforms Robert’s Rebellion from a straightforward tale of a stolen bride into something far more tragic. Robert believed he was fighting to reclaim the woman he loved, but the truth was potentially much more complicated.
He won the Iron Throne. He won the war. But he never got Lyanna back. And perhaps that is what makes Robert’s story so heartbreaking. The moment he achieved the victory he had spent years fighting for was also the moment when the dream that had driven him was already gone.
