‘Obsession’ has been in theaters for just over a month, but it feels like it’s already a growing franchise rather than a one-off horror film. The supernatural horror film has since become one of the biggest hits of the year, grossing a staggering $334 million globally.
So, naturally, there were a lot of questions about the future of its haunted world. And it looks like it’s going to be bigger than many fans would have hoped.
The Next Chapter Won’t Be ‘Obsession 2’

An ‘Obsession’ sequel isn’t on the horizon. However, writer-director Curry Barker has already established a foundation for several projects that will keep delving into the creepy world he established in the film. Instead of going straight to a traditional sequel, Barker first brought viewers back to the same universe with ‘Anything But Ghosts’.

The next horror movie is a pair of fake paranormal investigators who suddenly find themselves in the presence of true supernatural entities. And as in ‘Obsession’, the film’s rules are equally disturbing. The relationship is more than a coexistence in the same world.
Barker has announced that ‘Anything But Ghosts’ will feature a direct reference to Nikki’s story from ‘Obsession’, which will only be a further reason for fans to pay close attention.
The shared universe approach feels like a great idea. One of ‘Obsession‘s greatest assets was its premise that magic and paranormal activities are right under our noses. If the concept is to be used again, exploring other characters in similar situations may help keep the theme fresh.
Barker Already Has Bigger Plans In Mind

Although Barker has admitted he already has an idea for ‘Obsession 2’, he’s in no rush to make it. His schedule is full with directing a new ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ reboot and a few other projects. The delay might actually be good for the franchise.

It may be better to give viewers the chance to miss ‘Obsession’, making the eventual return even more effective. Even more interesting is Barker’s idea that it could become an anthology, with each story being about a different wish that went wrong.
It’s a concept that fits the mythology that was introduced in the first movie and would really help to expand the universe without the same characters. For the time being, there’s plenty for ‘Obsession’ fans to look forward to.
From a shared universe spin-off to a long-awaited sequel to a collection of new nightmares, Barker doesn’t appear to be done with this chilling universe. The first film might have just been the appetizer to a terrifying main course.
