Timothée Chalamet has accomplished more before turning 30 than many actors achieve in their entire careers. From Call Me by Your Name‘ to ‘Dune,’ ‘Wonka,’ andA Complete Unknown,’ he has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men while landing major awards recognition along the way.

Weighing in on it earlier this year, Chalamet admitted that the performances that catapulted him into stardom weren’t built on any carefully developed acting technique. Looking back, he said those early roles came almost entirely from instinct, and it wasn’t until years later that he discovered a process he could truly rely on.

While chatting with LeBron James and Steve Nash on the Mind the Game podcast, Chalamet reflected on how unlikely his acting career once seemed. Before discovering acting, he had his sights set on sports.

“I wanted to be a soccer player. I wanted to be a basketball player,” he recalled during the March appearance, explaining that acting only became a serious possibility after enrolling at New York’s LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts.

Although the school introduced him to acting, Chalamet never developed a formal routine for preparing his early performances. Instead, he relied almost entirely on instinct and natural ability whenever he stepped in front of the camera.

Chalamet compared his career to two NBA stars while looking back on those years. “I feel like in my career, I’ve felt like Brandon Roy at times, unheralded, and other times like LeBron, the chosen one.”

That mindset carried him through his breakthrough performances in ‘Call Me by Your Name’ and ‘Beautiful Boy.’ “The first roles I did well in…that was all raw talent,” Chalamet admitted. “There was no real process to it.”

As the conversation turned to preparation and performance under pressure, Chalamet explained that success eventually forced him to rethink his approach to acting. Following the acclaim for his early films, he suddenly found himself under constant public scrutiny.

The transition from promising young actor to global star made him realize that instinct alone wasn’t enough to sustain a long career. “I think it took a couple of years and the onslaught of fame for me to figure it out,” he said.

Rather than continuing to rely solely on natural ability, Chalamet gradually began developing a more disciplined way of preparing for each role. That change helped him navigate increasingly demanding projects while dealing with the expectations that came with worldwide fame.

The Roles That Finally Changed Chalamet’s Process

According to Chalamet, it wasn’t until two of his most recent projects that everything finally clicked. He pointed to portraying Bob Dylan in ‘A Complete Unknown’ and starring in Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’ as the first productions where he felt he had established a genuine acting process.

His method isn’t built around complicated acting techniques or elaborate rituals. Instead, it begins with removing distractions and giving his full attention to the work. For Chalamet, that starts with one surprisingly simple habit: “Turning your phone off…really locking in.”

It’s a straightforward philosophy, one that reflects how much his approach has evolved. The instinct that launched Chalamet’s career is still there, yet the actor now combines it with the focus and discipline he says he lacked during his earliest successes.
