Ryan Gosling has worked his charms with his latest hit ‘Barbie‘ as usual. While the star is popular for both his acting and his good looks, he has also faced quite a few rejections. Failures are definitely an essential part of any successful person’s journey, some failures just didn’t make sense — and Ryan Gosling has one such incident as well.
Ryan Gosling’s journey in Hollywood has been marked by both successes and missed opportunities. Despite his stellar career in films, Gosling has also experienced roles that he turned down or lost, including the part of Jack Salmon in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones’. And the reason why he did not go forward with it might come off as a great surprise for many.
Ryan Gosling Turned Fat For A Role And Was Still Turned Down
‘The Lovely Bones’ is a film based on Alice Sebold’s novel and follows the story of Susie Salmon. The story narrative kicks off with Susie, a young girl, being murdered by her neighbor, and follows her family’s journey through grief and loss. Gosling was initially cast to play Jack Salmon, Susie’s father, and he also prepared extensively for the role by gaining 60 pounds.
However, just days before the production of the film began, Gosling was fired from the film due to disagreements with the director Jackson. The reason for the clash was Gosling’s weight gain, which was purposefully incorporated to reflect Jack’s character.
The director of the film had envisioned an entirely different look for the role meant for Gosling. While Gosling was busy with his transformation, Jackson was overwhelmed with the production’s demands. He was consequently not fully aware of Gosling’s transformation until the actor showed up on set. The director was taken aback as the actor was nowhere close to what he had imagined.
Without a thought, Jackson fired Gosling. The actor then found himself “fat and unemployed” as he lost the role he had worked so hard to prepare for.

There’s Another Side To The Story That Contradicts Gosling’s
While Gosling’s version of events suggests there were disagreements with Jackson over the character’s portrayal, Jackson’s wife and collaborator, Fran Walsh, has a different story. According to Walsh, Gosling was not comfortable with the role as he had mentioned during pre-production, as he felt he was too young for the part.
Ultimately, Mark Wahlberg was cast as Jack Salmon, and Gosling moved on from the project. Losing the role in ‘The Lovely Bones’ was a setback for Gosling, but it did not derail his successful career. His recent role in ‘Barbie‘ retained his versatility and talent, as he now prepares to bring his charming Ken to the Oscars stage.
