Anne Hathaway confirmed the making of ‘Princess Diaries 3‘ following the news of ‘The Devil Wears Prada‘ sequel. The ‘Princess Diaries’ series was a romantic escape for viewers with the last installment released twenty years ago. In March, Julie Andrews (who plays Queen Clarrise) had crushed all hopes of another sequel. However, the Princess of Genovia is yet to dazzle her royal subjects.
Adapted from Meg Cabot’s novels, the film series differs widely from the books. In ‘Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement’, Mia Thermopolis is crowned the Queen of Genovia. However, Disney could adapt from the later sequels focusing on 2023’s ‘Volume XII: The Quarantine Princess’ for instance. Here’s what fans can now expect from ‘Princess Diaries 3‘.
What Is The Plot Of ‘Princess Diaries 3’?
Although the synopsis of ‘Princess Diaries 3’ has not been released, we can figure out a faint analysis from the previous installments and Meg Cabot’s work. In ‘Volume XI: The Royal Wedding’, Mia marries her high school sweetheart and best friend’s brother, Micheal Moscovitz. However, in the ‘Royal Engagement’ the film diverts to a new love interest for Mia, Nicholas Deveraux, played by Chris Pine.
Pine has confirmed to reprise his role as Nicholas. Therefore, we can expect Mia and Nicholas’s storyline to develop further in the Disney sequel.

Moreover, the film could include Mia’s reign over the land of Pears during or after the coronavirus. The 12th volume, ‘The Quarantine Princess’, explores Mia’s struggles with her marriage and small kingdom during the pandemic. The long lockdowns must have hit the Genovian economy heavily based on tourism. Mia’s plans to deal with the economic crisis would make an interesting plot.
Who Will Be In ‘Princess Diaries 3’?
Anne Hathaway confirmed the film on Instagram on October 5, captioning her post, “The fairy tale continues”. As mentioned above, Chris Pine has agreed to reprise his role as Nicholas, as per Entertainment Weekly. Many actors from the first installment will return for the third sequel. It also indicates that ‘Princess Diaries 3’ could be filmed in Mia’s hometown, San Francisco.

Sandra Oh, who plays Grove High School’s Vice Principal, is also excited to return to the sequel. She told Entertainment Weekly, “Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta [Sandra’s character] has moved up in the world.” Many Moore, who plays Mia’s bully in the first film, has also hinted at reprising her role.
However, it seems Queen Clarisse has stepped down from her role indefinitely. Julie Andrews mentioned her desire, “sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone.” Andrews has not appeared on set since 2010’s ‘Tooth Fairy’ apart from voice roles in animated works and ‘Bridgeton’.
Nonetheless, Hathaway is adamant about bringing Andrews back. “We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” she told Entertainment Tonight.
