Tim Burton, who boasts of mega success with Batman franchise that helped shape the scene of the superhero genre at that time, has just revealed that the director doesn’t have any intentions of returning to the superhero screen anytime soon.
Burton opened up on his experience with the superhero franchise, and how he kind of coined the term ‘franchise’. Here’s why the filmmaker is staying away from superhero films and what he is focusing on instead.
Here’s Why Tim Burton Will Not Return To The Superhero Screen
While promoting his new, upcoming sequel ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice’, the director talked about how he doesn’t wish to return to superhero movies.
Speaking to Variety, Tim Burton said, “At the moment, I would say no,” when asked about his plans to make superhero films in the future. “I come at things from different points of view, so I would never say never to anything. But, at the moment, it’s not something I’d be interested in,” he added.
He then added a little more about his experience with making the film, saying, “I was lucky because at that time, the word ‘franchise’ didn’t exist. ‘Batman’ felt slightly experimental at the time. … It deviated from what the perception [of a superhero movie] might be.”
“So you didn’t hear that kind of studio feedback, and being in England, it was even further removed. We really just got to focus on the film and not really think about those things that now they think about even before you do it,” he added.

What Is ‘Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice’ About?
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘, the upcoming sequel of the 1988 movie starring Jenna Ortega is an important film to Burton, who says it saved him from retirement. The old film ‘Beetlejuice‘ was about an unpleasant family who gets harassed by spirits and decides to take help from another spirit.
The new film will have Jenna Ortega in Winona Ryder’s place. More details about the film are still awaited.
In the same interview, Burton also opened up about his pandemic experience while directing ‘Dumbo‘ and how it made him want to retire.
“Honestly, after ‘Dumbo’, I really didn’t know. I thought that could have been it, really. I could have retired, or become… well, I wouldn’t have become an animator again, that’s over. (Laughs) But this did reenergize me,” he said of ‘Wednesday‘.
“Oftentimes, when you get into Hollywood, you try to be responsible to what you’re doing with the budget and everything else but sometimes you might lose yourself a little bit. This reinforced the feeling for me that it’s important that I do what I want to do, because then everybody will benefit,” he added.
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ will hit theatres this year in September.
