Timothée Chalamet says the real message hidden in ‘Dune: Part Three‘ isn’t about winning. It’s about being careful who you follow. While speaking at a global IMAX trailer event this week, the actor said Frank Herbert‘s story was always meant to warn people about blindly following powerful men, and that the final chapter finally lets that warning come through fully.
The event took place in Los Angeles and was shown live to audiences in Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, and several other cities. It gave fans the biggest look yet at how the trilogy wraps up. Director Denis Villeneuve joined Chalamet on stage, and much of their talk centered on how Paul Atreides, the messiah-like figure Chalamet has played across three films, finally faces the consequences of the empire he built.
‘Dune Messiah’ Storyline Explained by Timothée Chalamet and Denis Villeneuve

‘Dune: Part Three‘ draws on Herbert’s follow-up book, ‘Dune Messiah,’ picking up about seventeen years after Paul took control of the Imperium at the end of “Part Two.”
Chalamet explained that Herbert wrote that sequel because readers had misunderstood his message the first time. Herbert never wanted Paul seen as a simple hero. He wanted to show what blind devotion actually costs people. Chalamet put it plainly, saying, “Frank Herbert wrote Messiah as he wanted to warn the world what can happen when people blindly follow leaders. Even the good can be corrupted.”
Is Paul Atreides a Villain in ‘Dune: Part Three’

Chalamet pushed back on the idea that the third movie just turns Paul into a villain. He said that reading is too simple, telling the audience that he hoped the story was more layered than that. Chalamet gave credit to Herbert and Villeneuve for building what he called a nuanced warning about charismatic leadership. He added, with a nod to the story’s spice mythology, that “the proof is in the pudding,” a line Villeneuve couldn’t resist playing off, joking back about “spice pudding,” according to The Gate’s account of the moment.

It was also noted that Chalamet described Paul’s darker turn as something baked into the source material from the beginning, not something added late. Chani’s story matters here too. Zendaya‘s character ended “Part Two” feeling betrayed by Paul’s choices, and Chalamet said the new film carries that betrayal forward as their relationship keeps breaking down.
‘Dune: Part Three’ Cast, Release Date and Chalamet’s Final Reflections

Beyond the themes, Chalamet talked about what it feels like to finish a project he’s lived with for almost a decade, since he joined the franchise back in 2017. He said he felt a sense of finality while shooting the last film, even though he was still in his twenties during filming. The actor admitted that part of him felt like he was losing something once it wrapped.
He also praised how efficiently Villeneuve delivered three major films back to back, comparing it to Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ trilogy, and said simply that he trusts the director completely.
‘Dune: Part Three‘ also brings in Robert Pattinson as the shape-shifting Scytale and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, along with returning cast members Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem. The film, from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, hits theaters December 18.
