10. Samara Morgan (The Ring, 2002)

Morgan has withstood the test of time and has remained one of the scariest ghosts we have ever seen in movies. The most memorable part was definitely her design, with creepy black hair covering her face, demonic eyes, and white, scarred skin, making us believe she could crawl out of the television at any moment.

Ghost children have been a part of horror movies for years, but it was Samara who became the inspiration behind the ghosts we see in many iconic horror movies, including ‘The Grudge’ and ‘Dark Water’.

You wouldn’t expect to find one of the scariest monsters in a kids’ animated film, but here we are. In the 2009 movie ‘Coraline’, we meet the horrendous Other Mother, also known as Beldam, who uses her motherly nature to seduce children into her world, sew buttons over their eyes, and keep them imprisoned to consume their flesh for strength.

The way she was able to transform into Coraline’s ideal mother, a little too perfectly, was deeply unsettling. With her creepy fake smile and pitch-black button eyes, there is no doubt that, as children, we all were haunted by her in our dreams.

8. The Bride (The Bride, 2026)

No female horror movie monster lists can be complete this year without including the iconic revival of Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’, where we get to meet the Bride once again. After being killed by her rapists, a young woman named Ida finds herself brought back to life.

Along with Frankenstein’s monster, Frankie, she goes on a Bonnie and Clyde-style chase to take revenge on the men who raped her. Shelley’s brilliance was brought to our screens again, this time with a female monster who would go to any lengths to secure her autonomy and punish those who sought to silence her.

7. Red (Us, 2019)

Along with having one of the biggest twists in the horror film genre, ‘Us’ also flips the script when it comes to how we perceive monsters in general. When Adelaide and her family are attacked by their “tethered” doppelgangers, they soon realize that the worst monster was actually in their midst all along.

Moreover, Nyong’o brilliantly portrayed Adelaide as the innocent victim and her doppelganger, Red, as the terrifying monster, switching between the two personas throughout the movie.

6. Gingerwolf (Ginger Snaps, 2000)

‘Ginger Snaps’ is one of the few instances in cinema history of a female werewolf. When Ginger starts her period for the first time, a mysterious creature bites her, and on the next full moon, she slowly starts to transform into a werewolf.

From its use of werewolf as a metaphor for puberty to having clever feminist commentary, Gingerwolf tackles the topics of femininity and changing bodies excellently. All the while still remaining morbidly horrific.

In the resurrected 2013 version of ‘The Evil Dead’, we find the most vicious and vile monster in the whole franchise in Mia’s abomination version. Whenever we hear her name, there is no doubt that all we can think about is blood, guts, body parts, and all other horrific imagery.

The credit for making ‘Evil Dead’ one of the most unforgettable experiences goes to Jane Levy, who portrayed Mia in the movie. Her genuine commitment to playing the character, along with some special effects, turned Mia into one hell of a monster who could only see death and destruction of everyone’s bodies as well as souls.

4. Jennifer Check (Jennifer’s Body, 2009)

‘Jennifer’s Body’ is undeniably a cult classic when it comes to horror movies. She managed to be a poignant satire while also being utterly terrifying. The titular Jennifer was a simple high school student until she was assaulted and became a permanently possessed demon.

This is followed by her bloody reign of terror, which haunts the boys at her school. Acclaimed as a part of the MeToo movement, Jennifer Check remains a memorable female monster. It’s because she wasn’t going to sacrifice herself for the men’s own needs.

3. The Velociraptors (Jurassic Park, 1993)

The Velociraptors from ‘Jurassic Park’ might not be the first image that pops up when we think about female monsters. But there is no doubt they can take on literally anything.

Known as apex predators, Velociraptors are cunning and powerful, and they rely on teamwork to hunt their prey. Once they fix their gaze on something, nothing holds them back. Despite being one of cinema’s vicious creatures, the Velociraptor Blue became a fan favorite.

2. Xenomorph Queen (Aliens, 1986)

James Cameron’s ‘Aliens’ introduced the world to one of the most vile and cruel creatures that we have ever seen in cinema. The Xenomorph Queen, simply put, is a horrific monstrosity.

From her huge stature, the disgusting egg sack, and her vicious nature, she is definitely one of the scariest monsters of all time. Her fight with Ellen Ripley, driven by motherly instinct, is one scene we will never forget.

1. The Bride (The Bride of Frankenstein, 1935)

When Dr. Frankenstein was asked to make a second monster to serve as the creature’s mate, he made the Bride, only to find her recoiling in horror upon seeing her mate. This was a watershed moment in cinema because, by using the monster as an allegory, it served as an example of a woman rejecting a position imposed on her by men for their own needs.

The Bride was the OG female monster, changing the horror genre and providing the blueprint for many beloved creatures we see today. Although she had little screentime, she became a feminist icon and a cultural phenomenon.
