Since ‘Barbie‘ hit cinemas in 2023, Barbieland fans have been waiting for the announcement of a sequel. The Warner Bros. production was the highest-grossing movie with a collection of $1 billion for the year. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig has also frequently hinted at the possibility of a sequel.
Speaking about the same during a recent interview, Gerwig said she loves Ken’s character and had many great ideas for him that she could not include in the ‘Barbie’ script. She also mentioned that while writing the script with her husband, Noah Baumbach, they already knew that Ryan Gosling would play Ken. This might mean there would be a Ken movie next, but Greta has revealed that she is unsure in which direction the sequel would go. Here’s what she said.
Greta Gerwig Wishes To Make Another Impactful Film
While the possibility of a ‘Barbie 2’ is not ruled out, Greta Gerwig is unsure what the sequel will even look like. “I don’t know what more could even look like,” she said in an interview with CBS News.
Meanwhile, she does not oppose writing a script for a completely original film that has the same impact as ‘Barbie’. “We want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie has. I don’t know if it has to be Barbie 2,” she said.
Greta confessed that she wanted to work on an original idea. “Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that,” she added.

Greta Gerwig Hints At The Possibility Of A Ken Movie
When ‘Barbie’ was released, it faced much backlash as an “anti-men” film. Greta’s partner in work and life, Noah Baumbach, said at the time that he believed that men could take it. Speaking about Ken’s character during the recent interview, Greta revealed, “I love Ken…..we take Ken’s position quite seriously, I think that he has no identity outside her (Barbie).”
Greta related that the production was not interested in making the “I’m Just Ken” musical number for the film. She revealed that the entire musical number was shot in a day. But Greta hasn’t slapped down the possibility of a Ken movie.
“We have way too much material on Ken,” she said. Meanwhile, Baumbach encouraged the director to hold on to her ideas for the character for the possibility of a Ken movie.
