Who Will Be Playing Michael Jackson In His Biopic?

More than a decade ago music lost one of its most influential figures Michael Jackson. The sonic proficiency and the Jacks required for the music trade is what made him an immortal star. People still celebrate his music, and artists still look forward to paying homage to Michael. In recent years, biopics have taken over Hollywood, and they are  worthy of the coveted awards in the country like the recent Austin Butler starrer ‘Elvis’.

Michael Jackson is also added to this esteemed catalog. There was an announcement about the film life of the Pop icon Michael Jackson in the beginning of 2022. Lionsgate acquired the rights to distribute the film.  The producer of the Queen’s biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Graham King will be boarding as the producer along with John Branca and John McClain, the Jackson estate owners. However, for the longest time, they couldn’t find the actor to perfectly fit the role. But, a person closer to the Jackson family is finally locked in for the star’s portrayal.

The team on the upcoming biopic of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson titled ‘Michael’ has finally found the perfect actor to portray him. After a worldwide search for an artist, they found someone closer to home. Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of Michael Jackson will play his uncle in the Lionsgate biopic. On January 30th, 2023, Jaafar took to Instagram to share the news. He posted a black-and-white picture of himself dressed in the signature Michael Jackson costume. He wrote, “I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon”.

Jaafar is the son of Jermaine Jackson, Michael’s brother and a member of Jackson 5. He released his first single in 2019 titled ‘Got Me Singing’. Though he appeared in various other projects related to the Jackson family, ‘Michael’ will mark his first feature film project. The director of the film, Antoine Fuqua talked to Variety about what made them choose Jaafar. He said, “It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such a great chemistry with the camera”.

The ‘Emancipation’ Director, Antoine Fuqua Will Helm The Project

Antoine Fuqua has been a part of some important projects this year like the Will Smith-starrer ‘Emancipation’ and the famous Denzel Washington franchise ‘The Equalizer’. Veteran producer Graham King will be producing the film, who has films like ‘The Departed’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and ‘The Tourist’ under his belt. As per Deadline, the plot of the film will chronicle the making of one of the greatest entertainers ever to walk on earth, his famous performances, and it may also touch upon the doomed life that he lived marred with controversies, addiction, and allegations.

Talking to Variety, Fuqua said, “For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work — the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible”.
