Why Is Rihanna Getting Criticized For Her $1 Million Ruby Ring During The Halftime Performance?

After ‘Anti’ in 2016, Rihanna went into a sort of burrow. She took a hiatus from music and continued to build her billion dollar beauty empire. The entrepreneur became one of the youngest billionaires in the world with her ‘Savage X Fenty’ and ‘Fenty Beauty’. The year 2022 was like a blessing for her where she became mother to a beautiful son and released the Oscar nominated single ‘Lift Me Up’ from Wakanda Forever.

One of the most memorable nights for the Navy was on February 12th, 2023! It is when Rihanna took the center stage at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona performing at the NFL Super Bowl Halftime. It was the trip down memory lane for the fans. For six years, Rihanna did not perform her music in front of a larger audience. It was like a comeback for the songstress. During the night, she announced her second pregnancy. At the performance, she wore a red Loewe jumpsuit accessorized with a watch and a $1 million Ruby ring. The ring has caused an uproar for its relation to the oppressive regime in Myanmar.

One of the most awaited and successful Super Bowl performances was that of Rihanna! The singer was harnessed  to a wire and she gave a performance on a floating and moving glass piece amidst pregnancy. She performed some of her bangers like ‘B***h Better Have My Money’, ‘We Found Love’, ‘Diamonds’, ‘Work’, and others. Many celebrities like Cara Delevigne, Adele, A$AP Rocky, and others came to support the artist.

Rihanna got praises for her performance, but there was heavy criticism that she received as well. The origin of the criticism was her Ruby ring she was wearing from BAYCO. The ring is “a natural, unheated 19.47 carat sugarloaf cabochon Burma Ruby and 5.66-carats of trillion-cut and round-brilliant colorless diamonds set in platinum and 18kt yellow gold”.

However, the ‘Justice For Myanmar’ activist group found the move unpleasant. Currently, the country is under Min Aung Hlaing’s military regime since overthrowing a democratic government. The activist group claimed that Rihanna should be in support of Myanmar by calling a gems ban. This is because the gems trade from Burma helps the atrocious junta government with funding for their noxious activities.

It has been seven years since Rihanna released her last album ‘Anti’. There was a soul to her album. It took her three years to record and produce the album. But, it was one of the most musically superior albums of the artist. However, since then, she did not put out music until 2022 when she released her first single ‘Lift Me Up’ from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. The song is nominated for the Oscars in the ‘Best Original Song’ category.

However, RiRi did not stop recording music while she was on a hiatus. She has been recording music and kind of ready to put out a full album.

During the Vogue cover interview, she said, “I want it to be this year. Like, honestly, it’d be ridiculous if it’s not this year. But I just want to have fun. I just want to make music and make videos. And I need the right background music with the visuals. I can’t just go shoot a video to me talking”.
