North America’s biggest music festival, Coachella, kicked off on April 14, 2023. Throughout the years, the music festival evolved as a stage for artists to gain wider recognition. After the disastrous year 2000, the festival bounced back and has become a commercially successful weekend for music. In 2023, artists like Bad Bunny, Blackpink, Latto, Frank Ocean, and Blink-182 performed during the first weekend.
Artists like Bad Bunny, Diljit Dosanjh, and Blackpink scripted history, representing their country. However, the festival’s first weekend also saw a dud with R&B star Frank Ocean’s performance. It was an important moment, both for the artist’s fans and the festival. Ocean was performing on stage after six years, and his act was the closing act for the first weekend. However, due to a delayed, low-energy, and chaotic performance, the artist will not perform during the second weekend.

Blink-182 Will Replace Frank Ocean
It is impossible to undo the disappointing Frank Ocean’s performance at Coachella. Frank is a recluse artist who does not believe in creating a brand and instead focuses on making art, so it was an important night to interact with his fans. Many factors contributed to the chaotic performance. There were last-minute changes made to the stage production design.
The ice skaters were sacked last minute, and the artist asked for the ice rink to be removed. Due to this, the performance was delayed by an hour. Ocean’s non-interactive nature of the performance due to injury and no broadcast of the performance on YouTube disappointed the fans.
Now, Frank Ocean’s representatives have informed the fans that he will not be performing during Coachella’s last weekend. The reps reasoned that due to the leg injury, Frank will be unable to perform. The ‘blonde’ artiste has two fractures and a sprain in his left leg. As per Variety, Blink-182 will replace Ocean. Regarding the cancellation of the performance, the artist said, “It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.”

Coachella Has To Pay A Fine Due To The Artist
The first week of the Coachella, though immersive and successful, did not conclude on a financially relieving note. The organizers, Goldenvoice, had to pay a fine as per an agreement with Indio in 2013. As per the agreement, if the festival overran the estimated time by five minutes, it has to pay $20,000 as a fine. And, if the festival continues beyond five minutes, they have to pay $1,000 per minute.
Frank Ocean is one of the reasons why Coachella has to now pay $117,000 worth of fines. Frank Ocean’s performance was delayed by an hour, and it continued, further, for 25 minutes. So, the organizers now have to pay the amount to Indio. The money goes to Indio’s General Fund, which they utilize to cover reparation, restoration, and administrative costs.
