Richard Gadd’s revelation came during a candid interview with Deadline’s Awardsline. The 35-year-old Scottish comedian and actor admitted to playing the show on mute on release day. He called it a desperate attempt to boost initial viewership. “I remember thinking, ‘Maybe some people will watch it this weekend,‘” Gadd shared.

My hope was that the reviews would be good enough that perhaps I’d get to make another TV show off the back of it,” he said. It’s pretty clear from his words that the pressure of the show’s release was palpable. Moreover, despite the show’s critical acclaim and Emmy nominations, Gadd has maintained a distance from the show.

So it came out at 8 a.m. on the Thursday, and I haven’t watched the show since it came out,” he confessed, adding, “I probably never will again, to be honest.” The artist who bravely laid bare his deepest wounds for the world to see cannot bear to watch it on his own. This speaks volumes.

Moreover, Gadd’s admission invites us to reconsider the relationship between artist and artwork, suggesting that sometimes, the act of creation is a one-way journey. While the world continues to dissect and analyze ‘Baby Reindeer’, Richard Gadd seems content to remain an outsider.

The success of ‘Baby Reindeer’ has been accompanied by significant controversy. While the series has garnered critical acclaim, it has also drawn scrutiny for its portrayal of real-life events. Moreover, Gadd has maintained that his intention was to tell a personal story, not to expose or harm anyone.

“There’s the fact that the debate around the show has become a sort of whodunnit narrative, which is not something I ever wanted,” he said in the same interview. However, a woman claiming to be the inspiration for the character Martha has a different perspective.

She has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging defamation and claiming the series has caused significant damage to her life. The woman also spoke out against Gadd on the Piers Morgan Show, calling ‘the show ‘Baby Reindeer‘ dishonest. Moreover, the legal battle is ongoing, with Netflix standing by Gadd’s right to share his story.
