“The Possibilities Are Endless”: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Indicates Possibility Of A ‘San Junipero’ Sequel
Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who played the character of Kelly in the ‘Black Mirror’ episode named ‘San Junipero’, has some good news to share with the show’s fans. The actress recently said that she is open to revisiting the storyline of the episode, hinting at a sequel.
The 40-year-old actress also asserted the possibilities around a sequel. “Oh my gosh, the possibilities are endless,” Mbatha-Raw said. “I mean, I adored working with Mackenzie Davis, so anything I got to do with her again. Obviously, Charlie Brooker is such a genius writer,” she added.
In the episode, the characters Kelly and Yorkie — played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mackenzie Davis respectively – fall in love with each other in a virtual world where the elderly can visit and the departed can live as younger versions of themselves. The episode originally aired in 2016 and won two Emmy Awards in 2017 for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.
Speaking about the angle for a potential sequel, the actress recommended placing the lead characters Kelly and Yorkie in a different time period. “It would be fascinating to see them in a different time,” she said. “Obviously I think it was so iconic — the ’80s for ‘San Junipero’ — but if there was another time period that you could have that love story in, I think that would be amazing,” she added.

Writers Of ‘Black Mirror’ Are Also Considering A Sequel For This Episode
Charlie Brooker, the writer of the show, has also slightly entertained the idea of a sequel to ‘San Junipero’. ‘Black Mirror’ typically avoids sequels, but Brooker had nevertheless indicated that he is open to the possibility of a sequel, especially because of the positive response to the episode.
“We tend not to do sequels — certainly, I think we could — especially since we closed the story so nicely,” Brooker explained. “I kind of would be very nervous about going in and unpicking it. I mean, sometimes that is one thing where we think we could go back, and … there were scenes I cut out of the script,” he added.
“I’d written the scene where Kelly went to a kindergarten, and then you realize later that these were children who were all deceased, but it was such a dark and and mournful note to hit,” he said. “I think it was the right move to cut it out. But you could do a whole episode about that aspect of this world,” he added.
Though there’s no official confirmation of a sequel, Mbatha-Raw’s excitement should be enough to keep the fans’ hopes high until the writers actually decide to take this exciting idea forward. Meanwhile, season 1 to 6 of the show is streaming on Netflix.
