When you go for an audition blank, sometimes the unexpected happens, and Ken Leung can attest to that. But all’s well that ends well and now we have our live-action Commander Zhao.
The versatile actor, known for his role in ‘Lost’ recently shared an interesting behind-the-scenes fact. The actor leading Netflix’s live-action version of the animated hit ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ wasn’t even aware there was such a thing.
Ken Leung’s Audition Mix-Up
Ken Leung spills the beans on a level 20 secret audition experience. Recently in a conversation with Deadline, the actor revealed how at the time of the audition the project details were not as public. Unaware of the original animated series, Leung thought he was testing for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ franchise. The actor started, “I didn’t know the original at all,” continuing, “First of all, the audition, you couldn’t tell it was for Avatar. So it was kind of disguised as a different project. And when I first heard it was for Avatar, I thought I was gonna be blue.“
He further shared how he’s grateful that he didn’t have any prior information on the project as must’ve been the intent of the creators. “Looking back, I love that I came in blank,” said Ken. “Because when you have ideas, you can corrupt a pure process. You come in blank, things will come into it that will inform your playing of it in a way that it might not if you came in with preconceived ideas or plans. I was grateful for that,” he finished.
