‘Mindhunter’ Season 3 Hopes Reignited As Holt McCallany Hints At New Direction For Netflix’s Acclaimed Crime Thriller

For fans of ‘Mindhunter’, the long wait for closure, or even continuation, has felt like a slow-burning crime scene investigation of its own. After its mysterious disappearance following season 2 in 2019, the brilliant series about the early days of FBI criminal profiling seemed all but abandoned.

However, in a surprising twist, actor Holt McCallany (Bill Tench) has offered a fresh glimmer of hope. Now, what seemed very much impossible might be happening.

In a recent interview with CBR, Holt McCallany revealed that not only has he recently met with ‘Mindhunter’ creator David Fincher, but the director is actively considering reviving the story in a new form, as three two-hour films for Netflix. While it’s far from a done deal, the update is the most promising news fans have heard in years.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, ‘Mindhunter’ season 3 (or films) is still very much in limbo. As McCallany wisely cautioned, “the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.” Fincher, a famously meticulous filmmaker, isn’t likely to move forward unless the material meets his exacting standards. That’s both reassuring and frustrating. It’s reassuring because it means we won’t get a subpar revival, and frustrating because it means we may not get anything at all.

However, here’s what we do know: there are scripts being written. Netflix is still a willing partner. And most importantly, Fincher hasn’t slammed the door shut. “I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago,” McCallany revealed, “and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies.” That may sound like a soft maybe, but given how long ‘Mindhunter’ has been dormant, it’s a big deal.

One major issue, of course, is scheduling. Jonathan Groff, who plays Holden Ford, recently won a Tony Award in 2024 and is one of Broadway’s most in-demand performers. Fincher himself is knee-deep in a new film which is currently in pre-production. Still, the idea of ‘Mindhunter’ returning, even if only in a limited film format, has reignited fan excitement.

The biggest heartbreaker in all of this isn’t just that ‘Mindhunter’ ended too soon. It’s that, according to those close to the project, season 3 was going to be a total game-changer. Director Andrew Dominik, who was in talks to direct future episodes, previously revealed that the story was set to take a bold new direction. The core characters (Ford, Tench, and Dr. Wendy Carr) were going to step out from their basement hideaway and into the spotlight.

Yes, ’Mindhunter’ was headed to Hollywood. Dominik explained that season 3 would explore how the FBI’s early criminal profiling efforts began influencing pop culture. The show was set to depict the very moment when profiling left the realm of obscure federal paperwork and became a widely accepted tool in crime-solving and cinematic storytelling.

It’s difficult not to mourn what could have been. We were robbed of watching Holden and Bill navigate the glitz and chaos of L.A. Wendy Carr’s character, often isolated in the narrative, might have finally been given a broader arc. The idea is enough to make even the most rational fan scream. However, maybe it’s not too late.

Fincher clearly hasn’t forgotten ‘Mindhunter’, nor have the cast and crew. McCallany’s tone was thoughtful, even grateful, acknowledging how rare it is to be part of something so unique and artistically rich. “I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all,” he said.
