Johnny Depp Lawyers Talks About The Defamation Trial
Johnny Depp’s attorney said the actor emerged from his high-profile defamation trial victorious because he “owned his issues,” while the jury may have perceived that his ex-wife, Amber Heard, didn’t take accountability for her actions.
Attorneys Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez were appearing on NBC’s “Today Show” broadcast on Wednesday. They were asked why the jury didn’t accept Heard’s assertions.
Chew answered, “My sense is that it had to do a lot with accountability. Johnny owned his issues. He was very candid about his alcohol and drug issues. He was candid about some unfortunate texts that he wrote.” I think it was sharp contrast to Ms. Heard, who didn’t seem, or at least the jury may have perceived that she didn’t take accountability for anything.”
Talking about how Depp felt after the verdict, Vasquez said, “Depp felt an overwhelming sense of relief. I was speaking with a mutual friend of Johnny and ours. He said, ‘I haven’t seen Johnny smile like that in six years.” “The weight of the world is off of his shoulders. He’s got his life back,” Chew added.
The blockbuster trial between the Hollywood stars dominated headlines for six weeks. The case exposed their once-private lives to public scrutiny, causing a stir on social media platforms like Tik Tok and Twitter.
Depp’s Lawyers Respond To Heard’s Lawyer’s Claim Of Social Media Influencing The Jury
Talking about the verdict, Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoft has said that the social media discussion persuaded the jury. “There’s no way they couldn’t have been influenced by it,” Bredehoft claimed.
Depp’s lawyers indicated on Wednesday that they do not agree with this suggestion. “No, I don’t think there’s any reason to believe the jurors violated their oath,” Chew said.
Vasquez acknowledged that social media monitoring was “everywhere.” She then went on to say, “The jurors were admonished every single night. They had a tremendous amount of respect for the court and the process. They were doing the best they could.”
Heard’s lawyers have suggested the outpouring of sympathy for Depp on social media as part of a planned effort by him or on his behalf. Chew condemned that as “utterly baseless.” Such allegations, according to Vasquez, are “categorically false.”
When asked about the chances of an appeal from Heard’s side, Chew said, “We feel very confident, there were no errors that would justify any kind of successful appeal.”
