Amber Heard is “heartbroken” after the jury gave its verdict in favor of her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in their high-profile defamation trial. Now, Heard’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoft, has revealed that the actress wants to appeal the jury’s decision. She also pointed out that there were things that “caused the jury to be confused”, and that the cameras in the courtroom “made it a zoo”.
Amber Heard’s Lawyer Says She Has “Excellent Grounds” To Appeal The Verdict
Amber Heard’s attorney in the defamation trial against Johnny Depp, Elaine Bredehoft, appeared on “Today” and talked about the jury’s verdict. She said Heard wants to “absolutely” appeal the jury’s decision. The jury found that Heard defamed The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean actor in three separate statements in her 2018 op-ed, for which Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. On the other hand, just one statement by Depp’s attorney was found to have defamed Heard, for which she was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.
Bredehoft talked about Heard losing the case: “She was demonized here. A number of things were allowed in this court that should not have been allowed, and it caused the jury to be confused. We weren’t allowed to tell them about the U.K. judgment.”
About the appeal, she added that the actress “has some excellent grounds for it.”
Heard’s Attorney Feels Social Media ‘Influenced’ The Jury
Everyone was closely following the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial, which Bredehoft feels impacted the jury. She said, “Absolutely. Jurors (weren’t supposed to be looking at social media), but how can you not? They went home every night. They have families. Their families are on social media. We had a 10-day break in the middle because of the judicial conference. There is no way they couldn’t have been influenced by it. It was horrible. It was really, really lopsided. I was against cameras in the courtroom and I went on record with that and argued against it because of the sensitive nature of this. It made it a zoo.”
