Does Elon Musk Really Believe In Free Speech? His Actions Contradict His Views

Is it the end of a new beginning? Seems like! Since the takeover, Elon Musk has opted for some radical revamping at Twitter. In October 2022, Musk completed the halted Twitter deal after he and the company got into a legal battle after he alleged that Twitter did not certainly inform him about the bots and spam accounts. Since the takeover, he has dethroned the top-tier execs including the former CEO Parag Agrawal.

In the first week of November 2022, he decided to sack half of its 7,500 employees globally due to the increasing loss per day. One of the promises that the tech billionaire made was to provide a platform for free speech to others. Is he living up to it? Because he fired two of his employees over their expression of discontent with the technological errs.

‘Tis the season of laying off employees! The economy, especially for the tech industry, is not looking very good. Many industry giants like Meta sacked their employees due to poor third-quarter performance and impending recession. Twitter created a buzz when it fired its employees as it alleged that the company did not give them enough notice. The layoffs continued when Musk fired the contract workers overseas.

After firing the employees without any prior notice, Musk is firing Twitter employees on Twitter! On Sunday, Eric Frohnhoefer disagreed with Musk when the Tesla owner apologized for Twitter’s slow speed. He cited the Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs) for failing “to render a home timeline”.

A user asked Eric to inform his boss privately because it makes the former employee look like “a spiteful self-serving dev.” So, Eric replied, “Maybe he [Elon Musk] should ask questions privately. Maybe using Slack or email.” Musk, on Monday, replied, “He’s fired”. When the former engineer tried to log in, he could not do so tweeting about it, “Guess it is official now.”

When Elon Musk was in the process of completing his historic $44 billion Twitter deal, he cited one of the important reasons to buy Twitter. He tweeted, “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter because that is what free speech means.” For him, the microblogging platform is “a digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.” But, he is not presenting his case well!

Another former employee Ben Leib replied to the same apology tweet by writing, “As the former tech lead for timelines infrastructure at Twitter, I can confidently say this man has no idea wtf he’s talking about.” Ben told Bloomberg that he was fired on Sunday.
