Fans of ‘Will & Grace‘ might want to hold onto their nostalgia a little tighter, because a surprising new idea has just been teased.
Years after the show wrapped its revival, one of its biggest stars is already imagining a fresh twist that no one saw coming, and it involves stepping into a completely different world filled with rivalry, tension, and unexpected romance.
Eric McCormack Teases Storyline For ‘Will & Grace’ Spinoff

Eric McCormack, who famously played Will Truman, recently opened up about his idea for a potential spinoff while attending the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in Los Angeles. Speaking during PEOPLE’s exclusive coverage with host Danny Pellegrino, McCormack pitched a full storyline.

He imagined Will leaving his familiar New York life behind and heading to Vancouver, where he would coach his nephew’s hockey team. But the twist doesn’t stop there. McCormack teased a crossover-style concept inspired by the hit series ‘Heated Rivalry‘. It follows two professional hockey players entangled in a secret relationship.
“Here’s my pitch,” he said. “Will moves to Vancouver to coach his nephew’s hockey team… a little Heated Rivalry.” The idea brings comedy, sports, and romance into a fresh setting, and gives the beloved character a completely new dynamic while preserving his core identity.
The Show’s Cultural Impact Is Still Very Prominent Today

The original ‘Will & Grace‘ ran from 1998 to 2006 and centered on Will, an openly gay lawyer, and his best friend Grace Adler. The show later returned in 2017 for a revival. It ran for three more seasons and reintroduced the iconic characters to a new generation.

Now, McCormack admitted that no one involved initially realized how significant the show would become. At the start, it was simply meant to be a fun comedy, but its influence grew far beyond that.
“It’s incredible the journey it took,” he said, reflecting on how the show evolved in public perception. Over time, it came to be recognized as more than entertainment. McCormack pointed out that Joe Biden once called it one of the most important steps toward marriage equality.
That impact continues to grow across generations. McCormack shared how younger fans, many in their early 20s, now approach him with stories about discovering the show. They either learn through their parents or during their teenage years.
While McCormack is clearly open to experimenting with new ideas, Debra Messing has previously suggested a very different timeline for any return. In a 2022 interview, she shared that she doesn’t see another revival happening anytime soon.
She joked that the only version she could imagine would be much later in life. It will probably be something along the lines of a “Golden Girls in Boca Raton” scenario, where the characters reunite decades later. According to her, fans might have to wait around 30 years before revisiting their story in that way.
