‘House of the Dragon‘ has been receiving praise from the audience ever since it premiered on Sunday. The HBO show is set around 200 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones‘. Matt Smith, who plays the role of Daemon Targaryen, has been the highlight of the first episode.
The British actor recently gave an interview where he talked about how he was reluctant to do the show. He also expressed that ‘House of the Dragon‘, which is based on parts of George R. R. Martin’s 2018 book ‘Fire & Blood‘, may not replicate the success of its parent show.

Matt Smith Talks About Why ‘House Of The Dragon’ Won’t Be Able To Eclipse ‘Game Of Thrones’ Success
Matt Smith has received unanimous praise for his portrayal of the greedy prince Daemon Targaryen in ‘House of the Dragon‘. But the actor was initially reluctant to do the show knowing the baggage of ‘Game of Thrones.’
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt said he didn’t want to do the HBO show. “And I was like, “Ohhh. I don’t know. It’s a tough one, isn’t it? It’s a tough one to follow. Haven’t we seen this before?” But then [the offer] sort of didn’t go away. Then it came up again, and then I went in for a screen test, and then that was that.”
The British actor also expressed that it might not be able to eclipse the success of its parent show. He said that “it will be impossible to replicate or re-create that time.”
He continued, “It’s never gonna re-create the levels of success that Thrones had because it can’t — it was a totally original moment. But we’ve tried to create something that feels entertaining in a similar way, but will hopefully take on a different identity.”

Smith Questioned The Sexual Content Of The Show
‘Game of Thrones‘ was known for its heavy reliance on sex scenes and gory violence. Its prequel ‘House of the Dragon‘ is no different as it was clear with the first episode.
Matt talked about it in a recent interview. “You do find yourself asking, ‘Do we need another sex scene?‘” The 39-year-old actor said. “And they’re like, ‘Yeah, we do.’ I guess you have to ask yourself: ‘What are you doing? Are you representing the books, or are you diluting the books to represent the time [we’re living in]?’
‘The Crown‘ actor continued, “And I actually think it’s your job to represent the books truthfully and honestly, as they were written.”
He was asked whether his character has several steamy scenes in the show. The ‘Doctor Who‘ actor answered, “Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me.”
