The Irish singer, Sinéad O’Connor died at the age of 56. The musician had been struggling with various mental health issues. She rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with her most popular song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’. The artist was looking forward to touring in the coming years.
O’Connor had been vocal and outspoken about various social issues that triggered some dislike towards the singer. Her health had also taken hold of her life during the last few years. The singer’s death was first reported by The Irish Times. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” her family shared with the BBC.
The cause of death had not been revealed earlier. It has been concluded by the police that the singer was found ‘unresponsive’ in her residence. She was pronounced dead at the scene. But the death is not treated as suspicious. And there has been no medical cause of death given. However, London’s Inner South Coroner’s Court has directed an autopsy to be done. The result would be available after several weeks. The need for an inquest would be decided by the court then.
Sinéad had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. She also faced troubles with endometriosis and took treatment along with a radical hysterectomy for it in 2015. The tragic loss of her son Shane’s suicide in 2022 also got the singer hospitalized as she struggled mentally.
Sinéad O’Connor was born in Dublin on December 8, 1966, as the third child of John and Maria. The singer had a very difficult childhood with her parent’s divorce and her mother’s physical and psychological abuse. “I describe myself as a rescue dog: I’m fine until you put me in a situation that even slightly smells like any of the trauma I went through, then I flip my lid,” the singer told People in 2021 about her mental health issues which resulted from her trauma.

The music legend came out with her debut album in 1987 after she moved to London. It was the next album that came out in 1990 that rose her to international fame. ‘Nothing Compares 2 U‘ became a global hit.
The artist faced backlash after she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II when performing the cappella version of Bob Marley’s ‘War‘ in SNL. This act was a reaction towards the Catholic Church for covering up cases of sexual child abuse. Even though the singer faced criticism, she admitted later to having no regrets about what she did.
O’Connor didn’t rise to much fame ever again. She later got involved in a custody battle with John Waters for her daughter. This led to her trying to take her own life. Later, the Irish singer became an ordained priest of the Latin Tridentine Church as she turned to religion for healing. However, she converted to Islam in 2018. There were times when O’Connor gave up her music career. But she found her way back to her lifeline. Of latest, the artist was planning on touring in 2024 and 2025.
