Lupita Nyong’o, being a dark-skinned beauty, has struggled due to her dark skin since her teenage years. It has been a decade since the actress made her debut and even won The Academy Award and is a successful actress in the industry.
The actress grew up in Kenya and attended college in Massachusetts, revealing that some of her friend’s parents considered her a ‘bad influence’ due to her unusual style. But she never let the haters overpower her.
Lupita Nyong’o Revealed She Was An Underconfident Teen
Lupita Nyong’o was a different kind of teenager as she didn’t follow the usual norms of ‘normal’. She had green hair and unusual clothing which made her stand out in the crowd. However, the attention she received wasn’t good at all. During an interview with Glamour, the ‘Black Panther’ actress revealed her struggles as a teenager.
Lupita revealed that she was teased for being ‘dark skinned‘. She continued, “I went to an all-girls school for elementary school, and then I switched to coed school when I was 12. So, just when I was coming into myself and becoming aware of my sexuality, I was being teased a lot by boys for being dark”.
But she also worked on it and didn’t let it affect her. The actress continued, “So I wasn’t confident, but how I dealt with that was, I think, I just developed my character to compensate“.

Lupita Was Nervous During Her Academy Award Win
The Academy Award win was one of the biggest achievements for the actress. She was nervous before the announcement of her name. Lupita said, Christoph Waltz was holding an envelope for best winning supporting actress and she manifested her name there.
She said, “I was in my head, Please say Lupita, please say Lupita,” and he said her name. At first, Lupita couldn’t recognize her name but later her brother screamed at her. Even after still so many years, the actress is not completely over the moment as it feels unreal to her.
She also mentions in the interview, “I didn’t think I was not going to win, I hoped I would win. How could I? It was my first film. I had absolutely no expectation; I cannot stress that enough.”
