“I Began Directing Out Of Necessity”: Taylor Swift Talked About How She Got Into Directing
It is not new for our multi-tasker artist to direct. Taylor had earlier directed her music videos like “The Man,” “Willow,” and “Cardigan.” For her, directing was a “natural extension of storytelling and writing.” In the interview, Swift said that she began directing “almost out of necessity.”
She said, “My first instinct [on The Man] was to write the treatment, send it out. I wanted a female director to direct it. And all of my favorite female directors were booked and busy, which is great. We love that. That’s fantastic. So I just figured maybe I could do it?”
When she used to see other music directors, she would pinpoint the things that she could’ve done better. Taylor added, “The list of things that I was absorbing became so long that eventually, I thought, ‘I really want to do this.'” Taylor found the process of directing fulfilling. In the interview, she also expressed that she would love to helm a feature film.
After the “All Too Well” experience, she said, “It would be so fantastic to write and direct a feature. I don’t see it being bigger in terms of scale. I loved making a film that was so intimate with a group that was really small and a really solid group of people that I trusted.”
