Johnny Depp emerged victorious in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp sued Heard for $50 million for her Washington Post op-ed in which she implied he was abusing her. Heard pursued a $100m counterclaim.
The jury found that Heard defamed Depp on all three counts and awarded him $15m ($10m in compensatory damages and $5m in punitive damages) which automatically got reduced to $10.3m because of the laws in Virginia. The jury also awarded Heard $2m in favor of one of her defamation claims.
Now, after the verdict is out, Amber Heard said she’s under a lot of legal bills and cannot pay the $8.3m she owes Johnny Depp. However, during the trial, the actress left no stones unturned in keeping herself and her family in the lap of luxury.
How Much Did Amber Heard Pay For Her Luxurious Home Away From Home?
According to sources, Amber Heard rented a house during her trial with Johnny Deep whose rent was $22,500 a month. Rental records do not include Heard’s name but witnesses in the neighborhood say that they saw Amber with her daughter, her mom, and her sister at the house.
The home in question is reportedly a 13,000-square-foot mansion, 30 minutes away from the Fairfax County courthouse. The property sits on an acre of land and has its own tennis court. Other luxurious amenities include a home movie theater, eight bedrooms, and a pair of sweeping staircases in the entryway. It is reported as one of the most distinctive and private estates offered in McLean.
Despite her claims of financial woes, the American actress chose luxury for herself and her family and on being asked whether Amber Heard will be able to pay damages she owed to Depp, her attorney said “absolutely not”
Payment Or Appeal Of The Verdict: What’s Next?
As per the jury, Amber Heard owes Johnny Depp $8.3m. Heard’s attorney Elaine Bredehoft said they have excellent grounds to appeal the verdict and have plans to do so. They believe that Johnny Depp’s team suppressed a lot of evidence that might have won Amber the case. “We had an enormous amount of evidence that was suppressed in this case that was in the UK case,’ Bredhoft said, ‘In the UK case when it came in, Amber won and Mr. Depp lost.”
Bredehoft also believes that the jury was influenced by public opinions particularly by social media. “There’s no way they couldn’t have been influenced”, she said. “It was horrible. It was really, really lop sided. It’s like the Roman coliseum, how they viewed this whole case.”
