As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, Ukraine is facing greater difficulties with a dwindling supply of ammunition. However, the United States has stepped up and decided to send them a military aid package. But this package might be more dangerous than it sounds. The package would mostly have cluster bombs.
All the nations are worried about this package since cluster bombs are not the best type of ammunition. So let’s take a look at all the details right here.
What Are Cluster Bombs? Why Are They Banned In Many Countries?
As the name suggests, a cluster bomb is a type of weapon that is designed to disperse smaller bombs over a large area. Also known as cluster munitions, they contain several smaller bombs called submunitions or bomblets.
These bombs were used in World War II and they are highly dangerous. Cluster bombs can be dropped from the air or fired from land too.
The problem with these bombs is that many times the bomblets remain unexploded. In that situation, unexploded bombs remain in an area for a long time which can harm and kill people for years later.
“Large-scale use of these weapons has resulted in countries and regions being infested with tens of thousands, and sometimes millions, of unexploded and highly unstable submunitions,” the International Committee of the Red Cross said. Thus Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK are among the NATO members who have expressed concern and are against this decision.

Joe Biden’s Stance On The Development
Despite all the concerns, the US is going against most of the NATO members and is ready to deliver the bombs to Ukraine. Joe Biden also confirmed the news himself.
Joe Biden confirmed that the military aid package will be worth $800 million. He also acknowledged the difficulty of the decision given all the danger but he emphasized on Ukraine’s need for the ammunition.
Peter Ricketts, UK’s first national security adviser also spoke about the situation. He said, “You can feel the allies are all very uncomfortable with this. It is a hard choice of the kind that countries have to make in wartime. I am uncomfortable with it, yes I wish it wasn’t being done, but I think we can understand why they are doing it.”
