‘Lost’ may have wrapped up its run over sixteen years ago, but to this day, the show’s ending continues to provoke fierce discussions and strong emotions. The adventure and psychological series dramatically reshaped the production of serialized television.

However, the ABC Network decided not to pursue the original plan. Read on to know the full scoop!

Recently, entertainment journalist Emir Han took to X to share yet another detail about the show’s infamous conclusion.

For those not familiar, the finale of ‘Lost’ was already shocking for having gathered all major characters into a kind of purgatory afterlife. But as Han explained, the showrunners initially planned for something a whole lot bigger.

He revealed that the series planned to have a showdown between Jack Shephard and the Man in Black inside an erupting volcano—the very embodiment of unleashed evil and darkness. Essentially, that particular set would have become the final, highly dramatic showdown between good and evil.

But despite the show’s success, the plan didn’t come to fruition because ABC executives couldn’t justify spending millions on building a believable volcano set piece in 2010. Therefore, the final fight was downscaled to an epic mudslide battle in a jungle, which was certainly a huge disappointment.

This particular revelation gives us an entirely new insight into the island’s lore. Throughout the show’s final episodes, viewers learned that the island itself had magical properties.

It served as a kind of cork, keeping the well of evil from swallowing the Earth. Thus, the volcano would have represented a physical manifestation of the latter.

In contrast to the above idea, ‘Lost’ eventually delivered a character-driven finale in May of 2010. In the final episode, titled ‘The End,‘ producers created what they called “flash-sideways.”

It was the spiritual realm between life and death, inspired by the ‘Tibetan Book of the Dead.’ At first, the Oceanic passengers would have to find themselves in that particular bardo space before realizing what had happened to them and moving forward.

As soon as Jack saved the island by placing the stone cork back, he died in the real world and moved onto joining his friends in a church setting.

Despite its emotional depth, such an abrupt change in direction didn’t sit well with many fans. They were disappointed that the creators did not provide concrete answers about the island’s nature.

What’s more, viewers mistakenly thought that the passengers were actually already dead since the first season, a theory that showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse explicitly denied.

In his later interviews, Cuse stated that each time the writers provided viewers with logical explanations regarding the island’s secrets, they were rejected in favor of the character arc development and emotionality.

Thus, as the duo admitted, creating a perfect ending for a mystery show is incredibly difficult since people don’t want the enigmatic side of things to end abruptly.

While Lindelof later regretted the excessive use of religious symbolism in the church scene, he and Cuse were nevertheless confident in their decisions. And that’s what shaped the show’s controversial finale.
