The Creative Tour De Force Is Exiting After Twenty Years
Michele officially will step down from his duties as creative director at Gucci after boosting the brand and putting it back on the map. It was 2015, after Tom Ford, Frida Giannini took the reins and continued the creative efforts to make Gucci the label that Tom Ford revamped.
After the 1990s sexual, controversial, and testosterone-filled era, Frida brought sensuality and intimacy. But, when she was fired by François, the new CEO at Gucci hired Alessandro Michele.
The new, young, hip creative had less than a week to put a show together for the 2015 Fashion Week. In that span, he created something that became an identity that was attached to the brand since—an eccentricity that was entwined with fluid identity. He brought a financial boost to the brand as well. Michele tripled the revenue from $40 billion to $10 billion.
In his statement, he cited “different perspectives” as the reason for his departure. He said, “Today an extraordinary journey ends for me, lasting more than twenty years, within a company to which I have tirelessly dedicated all my love and creative passion. During this long period Gucci has been my home, my adopted family.”
He continued, “To this extended family, to all the individuals who have looked after and supported it, I send my most sincere thanks, my biggest and most heartfelt embrace. Together with them I have wished, dreamed, imagined. Without them, none of what I have built would have been possible.”
