Why Did Elon Musk Introduce The View Count Feature On Twitter?

Twitter has gone under some drastic transformation since Elon Musk took over the platform. The $44 billion deal has been a turbulent process for the new CEO, but Musk was determined to purchase the company due to his passion to revamp it. Elon was so passionate to buy Twitter that he has jeopardized his electric car venture with the shareholders expressing concern. But, his determination has led to many changes through the trials and errors. When Elon Musk acquired the company, there were many hindrances.

Due to pressure from political activists and his erratic behavior, Twitter faced huge financial losses when the advertisers pulled out. To better the revenue, he introduced a subscription plan for acquiring the ‘blue checkmarks’, which he thought would provide legitimacy and bring revenue. However, many impersonators resurfaced due to which, he pulled out the feature. Later, he reintroduced the ‘blue checkmark’ with some exclusive features. Now, he has unveiled the ‘View Count’ feature which will enable users to see the views on a tweet like a video.

On December 1st, Elon Musk complained that there is a lack of activity on Twitter despite the large number of Twitter users. He announced, “Twitter will start showing view count for all tweets, just as view count is shown for all videos. The system is far more alive than it would seem”. Elon has kept his promise and introduced the ‘View Count’ feature on December 22nd, 2022.

Earlier, Twitter introduced the analytics feature to give the users “powerful insights into how your account is performing”. A small graph-like icon takes the user to a dashboard to check the ‘impressions’ on a particular tweet as well as their account. There are metrics that provide you with a number of new followers, profile visits, and website visits to help enhance content’s performance.

Now, those metrics will be displayed with every tweet and media. On December 21st, 2022, Musk announced, “Twitter is rolling out View Count, so you can see how many times a tweet has been seen! This is normal for video”. This will help people to know about the engagement on Twitter and how it is alive.

He continued, “Shows how much more alive Twitter is than it may seem, as over 90% of Twitter users read, but don’t tweet, reply or like, as those are public actions”. In April 2022, the SpaceX owner called out eminent personalities like Barack Obama, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and others for not tweeting.

On December 21st, Elon Musk and Twitter updated the $Cashtags feature introduced in 2015. Earlier, the users could use the $ symbol with any company’s stocks to check the buzz around it. Now, in an updated system, Twitter will display the real-time stock graphs along with the tweets tagging the stocks. Also, Twitteratis may or may not use the $ symbol which still yields results for the given input.

Twitter has partnered with Robinhood.com, a decentralized trading platform with free of cost trading. The app gained prominence when in 2021, Wall Street Traders snubbed GameStop. So, a subreddit used Robibhood.com to spike the stocks and they accomplished the target with GameSpot’s stocks shooting up to 14,300%.

Elon appreciated the team at Twitter, which is now less than half for the new product improvements. He wrote, “One of many product improvements coming to financial Twitter! Nice work by Twitter team”.
