Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp were once the talks of the town. Their relationship blossomed and he proposed to his ‘Edward Scissorhands’ co-star. Depp had inked “Winona Forever” on his right arm. But later changed it to Wino forever.
The two were engaged for three years between 1990 to 1993, then moved on with their lives. Their closeness is apparent with the latest news. It turns out that Ryder had called Depp in the 1990s to explain homosexuality to the then 9-year-old Christina Ricci. She confessed this piece of info in a recent interview.
Ricci Learned About Homosexuality From Johnny Depp
Ricci recently appeared on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live to discuss the current season of Showtime’s ‘Yellowjackets’ as well as Netflix’s upcoming series ‘Wednesday.’
The 42-year-old actress talked about learning the concept of homosexuality for the first time from Johnny Depp. It was on her very first film set and it also involves Winona Ryder. She said, “Johnny is actually the person who explained to me what homosexuality was when I was 9.” The host then asked her the backstory.
“There was something going on on set and someone was not being nice to someone else,” she stated. “And they were like, ‘Oh, well he might be homophobic.’ And then I was like, ‘Well, I don’t understand what that is.’
Ricci then added, “And, and I was in Winona’s trailer and she was like, ‘I don’t know how…’ so she put me on the phone with Johnny. And Johnny explained it to me.” She told Cohen, “Like the simplest terms… yeah. He was like, ‘It’s when a man wants to have sex with a man. And when a woman wants to have sex with a woman,’ and I was like, ‘Ah okay.'”
Ricci and Ryder were working together on the 1990 film ‘Mermaids’, starring Cher. Ryder was famously dating Depp at the time.
Winona Ryder Talks About Her Split With Depp
The ‘Stranger Things’ actress recently talked about her highly-publicized relationship with Depp. The two had met at the ‘Great Balls of Fire!’ premiere in June 1989. Ryder and Depp started dating two months later before she turned 18.
“That was my ‘Girl, Interrupted‘ real life,” Ryder said referencing her eponymous film. “I remember, I was playing this character who ends up getting tortured in a Chilean prison [in the 1994 film The House of the Spirits],” she said.
“I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face [from filming], and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. ‘Would you be treating this girl like you’re treating yourself?’, Ryder asked.
The actress continued, “I remember looking at myself and saying, ‘This is what I’m doing to myself inside.’ Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”
