“You Write What You Know”: Lisa Kudrow Talks About Lack Of Diversity In ‘Friends’

Lisa Kudrow is an actor with a very interesting body of work. The 59-year-old actress has been active in the entertainment industry for around three decades. She rose to prominence and is still widely known for portraying Phoebe Buffay in the popular sitcom ‘Friends.’

Her character’s sense of humor and weird behavior clicked with the audience. Over the years, people and the show’s makers have realized that it was not without flaws. Lisa recently talked about the lack of diversity in ‘Friends‘ as its entire cast is all white. Two years ago also, the actor had talked in detail about the same issue.

The ‘Smelly Cat’ singer gave an interview to The Daily Beast where she talked about the fact that ‘Friends’ had no black character.

She said that if it ever returned to TV then “it would not be an all-white cast.” Lisa said, “Well, I feel like it was a show created by two people who went to Brandeis and wrote about their lives after college.”

And for shows especially, when it’s going to be a comedy that’s character-driven, you write what you know“, she added.

Kudrow then tried to make sense of the all-white cast. “They have no business writing stories about the experiences of being a person of color.” She further said, “I think at that time, the big problem that I was seeing was, ‘Where’s the apprenticeship?'”

Since its original run, the show has met with criticism for several reasons. Lack of diversity is the major one as the story takes place in the metropolitan city of New York.

In July, the show’s co-creator Marta Kauffman expressed that she was “embarrassed” and felt “guilt” over the lack of diversity on ‘Friends.’

She then donated $4 million to create the Marta F. Kauffman ’78 Professorship in African and African American Studies at Brandeis University.

Marta said, “I want to make sure from now on in every production I do that I am conscious in hiring people of color and actively pursue young writers of color. I want to know I will act differently from now on. And then I will feel unburdened.”

The creator has said that she got the feeling after George Floyd’s murder that took place in 2020.
