It has been nearly eight months since Queen Elizabeth II died due to old age. The world, along with the UK, mourned the death of the late monarch in September 2022. King Charles III became the rightful heir to the throne, taking over the administrative duties. But on May 6, 2023, King Charles III will be ceremoniously crowned as the new monarch.
The coronation ceremony of King Charles III will take place at Westminster Abbey. The religious ceremony to crown Charles as king will be different from that of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles III made many tweaks to the traditional Christian ceremony to make it more inclusive. So, instead of a homage to peers, Charles’ coronation will extend the homage to people.

King Charles III Will Have A “Homage Of People” During His Coronation Ceremony
The coronation ceremony of King Charles III will be a countrywide affair, where delegates from different countries will witness the ceremony.
This time, the ceremony will be different from what it was in 1953. Traditionally, vassals paid their allegiance to the monarch, kneeling before the lordship and uttering words of acknowledgment to the monarch.
However, for King Charles III’s ceremony, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, urged the people of the UK to swear their allegiance. The people joining the coronation ceremony via many mediums will, in a move, swear their allegiance together in a “chorus of a million voices.”
The citizens will have to read the order of service as follows: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to your majesty and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me, God.”

The Monarch Will Have ‘A Slimmed’ Down Coronation Ceremony
Unlike Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ceremony, the new monarch has decided to have a less extravagant affair. As per a report by the Independent, Charles made this decision keeping in mind the financial crisis that ordinary people in the UK are suffering through. The coronation ceremony’s duration is cut down from three hours to one hour. The guest list has been trimmed down to 2,000 people.
However, the monarch has decided to have a multi-faith ceremony rather than the traditional Christian ceremony. Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the country and a Hindu, will read the Bible as the PM of the country despite the Church’s strict non-Christian faith intervention. The Archbishop of Canterbury said, “It is my prayer that all who share in this service, whether they are of faith or no faith, will find ancient wisdom and new hope that brings inspiration and joy.”
