Princess Diana met Tom Cruise on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible‘ in 1995 after taking Prince William and Prince Harry behind the scenes. Although the royal visit proved a hit with her sons, Diana later told royal chef Darren McGrady why Cruise could never be a possible date.
Princess Diana Took William And Harry To The ‘Mission: Impossible’ Set
Diana became one of the world’s most eligible women after her split from Prince Charles. She first met Cruise at a film premiere in 1992, then received a special invitation to visit the ‘Mission: Impossible‘ set at Pinewood Studios in London three years later. The movie arrived in cinemas in 1996.

McGrady recalled the story on his YouTube channel. He said, “She came into the kitchen one morning and said, ‘Darren, we’ve had an invite to go and watch the making of ‘Mission: Impossible’ at Pinewood Studios in London, for me to take [Prince] William and [Prince] Harry.’”
Diana then asked whether he thought “the boys would be interested” in joining her. McGrady believed William and Harry would enjoy “the pyrotechnics and everything,” but he also jokingly told her, “I’m not sure about the boys, Your Royal Highness, but if you get to meet Tom Cruise…?”. Cruise was married to Nicole Kidman at the time, so he was not available anyway.
Diana Had A Funny Response After Meeting Tom Cruise
Diana instantly understood McGrady’s joke and replied, “Darren, I’ll crack the funnies!”. She later took William and Harry to the set, where they watched the cast and crew bring the action movie to life.

Following the visit, Diana returned to the kitchen and told McGrady that William and Harry had “absolutely loved it, all those explosions and things.” However, she initially said nothing about meeting Cruise. McGrady explained, “She came in, picked up some fruit, walked out, and didn’t say anything.” Diana then delivered a final comment just before leaving the room.
McGrady continued, “But as she was walking out, she said, ‘That’s another one off the list. He’s too short!’ She’d met Tom Cruise.” Diana stood at 5 feet 10 inches, while Cruise stands at around 5 feet 7 inches, which apparently ruled him out in her eyes.
Cruise still maintained a connection with the royal family. He and Kidman attended Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 6, 1997, only two years after the Pinewood Studios visit. Decades later, Cruise reunited with Prince William at the Digger premiere in 2026. William attended the event alongside his wife, Kate Middleton, and the three walked the red carpet together.
