Controversies, both on- and off-screen, aren’t new in the entertainment industry. Sometimes, they result in an abrupt cancellation. Other times, they lead to messy plotlines or eventual disinterest, causing the series to slowly die.
Be it the chaotic behind-the-scenes drama or the insensitive portrayals of real-life stories, these controversial TV shows have gained the most media attention in the decade. But for all the wrong reasons.
10. 13 Reasons Why (2017 – 2020)

Jay Asher’s book adaptation, ’13 Reasons Why’, enjoyed a successful track record throughout its four seasons. But the series has come under fire for insensitive handling of trigger topics. Its plot tackles themes of suicide and self-harm, but they are showcased through graphic scenes.
This sparked major disagreement among the audience, leading many to blame the show for influencing youth. The original book that the series is based on was even banned for its content in some parts of the world.

9. The Idol (2023)

Sam Levinson’s ‘The Idol‘ never seemed to catch a break from criticism throughout its production and premiere. Its ultimate cancellation after the first season proves it. The star-studded cast couldn’t make up for the plot inconsistencies and the overt objectification of several characters, which didn’t sit well with the audience.
The series was also met with several off camera drama. Rumors of a toxic work environment and related factors naturally led viewers to lose interest in the series.
8. The Walking Dead (2010 – 2022)

The zombie apocalypse-centered horror ‘The Walking Dead’ starts off strong with a promising premise and quickly gains attention. However, during its final seasons, the show was mired in severe controversies, ranging from sloppy writing to the desensitized portrayal of death.
There were also lawsuits levied against AMC and others associated with the show, regarding its treatment.
7. Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022)

Netflix’s ‘Dahmer’ was developed and executed under questionable circumstances. Several of the victims’ families did not consent to their mentions in the scenes, and the obvious trauma from the experience that they had to endure was lightly handled.
Not to mention the fact that instead of portraying Dahmer as the horrific psychopath he is, the series takes on the real story as entertainment content, which is a major blow to the ethical side.
6. Hannibal (2013 – 2015)

As a psychological horror series, ‘Hannibal’ features several instances in which graphic themes and content are excessively normalized. The same can be observed with the portrayal of the titular character as well.
Instead of focusing on the negatives, the show explores Hannibal Lecter’s personality beyond his psychopathic side, a move that ultimately garnered low ratings. Yet, in the past couple of years, it has been bestowed with a cult status.
5. Riverdale (2017 – 2023)

Perhaps the wildest teen show to ever grace the decade, ‘Riverdale’ has had its fair share of controversies. The series was in a lot of heat for it’s over sexualisation of teens, messy plot, and the lack of adequate representation its cast had. This was particularly addressed by actress Vanessa Morgan, who plays Toni Topaz in the series.
Also, the show deviates severely from the source comics, which was a major cause of disappointment among its fans. All these aspects culminated in declining interest, even as the actors were speculated about in the later seasons.

4. Euphoria (2019 – Present)

‘Euphoria’ is one of those shows that naturally pulls you in with its dark aesthetics, impeccable soundtrack, and flashy visuals. It brings several aspects of teen life, including family, substance abuse, and peer pressure, into its storyline. While the series is popular, it has also been the subject of controversy. The behind-the-scenes drama that accompanied the production of season 2 is public knowledge.
Sam Levinson and the cast faced visible tensions, scheduling conflicts, and a demanding workplace environment, leading several cast members to express their disapproval. Barbie Ferreira quit the show with the second season. With its edgier, young-adult storyline in the final season, the relevance of the series is under scrutiny.
3. Game of Thrones (2011 – 2019)

‘Game of Thrones’ is the epitome of prestige TV, going on to break world records. The eight-season adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s book series has its fair share of questionable moments, but the series’s larger controversy stems from its lack of inclusivity and excessive creative freedom.
This was particularly evident in the public’s reaction to the final seasons, which seemed to render character build-up useless. Now, many unresolved plotlines are plaguing long-term fans.
2. The Last of Us (2023 – Present)

The primary controversy surrounding ‘The Last of Us’ centers on its plotlines. The shifts observed in season 2, in terms of character arcs and casting, divided the fan base and led to a decline in viewership.
This includes Ellie’s sexuality and the death of Joel, who was a favored character among the audience. The series is gearing up for season 3, which is also supposedly its final installment.
1. Harry Potter (2026)

When the ‘Harry Potter‘ show was first announced by HBO, it was met with deep negative scrutiny. The legacy of the Warner Bros. film series was so epic that the audience refused to picture the characters with new faces. Not to mention the arguments surrounding J.K. Rowling’s lack of involvement, the alleged disapproval of the casting, and more, which led to major backlash.
The accusations were about a cash grab attempt, and several cast members, including Paapa Essiedu (the reboot’s Severus Snape), faced cyberbullying and death threats. The young trio is also being compared to the originals. Now, it remains to be seen if the show can cast another spell over the audience.
