  • The connections between characters are often toxic, filled with betrayal, manipulation, and blurred moral boundaries.
  • Supernatural elements, crime, or psychological tension add depth, making the relationships feel even more intense and unpredictable

Love stories aren’t always soft and sweet; there’s a dark side to them, and it’s quite addictive. These shows go beyond the usual boy-meets-girl storyline and delve into relationships marked by obsession and power struggles.

If you enjoy stories that feel a bit risky and unpredictable, you’re in the right place. Here is a list of the top 10 dark romance shows that take love to a whole new level.

10. 56 Days

Based on the book by Catherine Ryan Howard, ’56 Days’ follows Ciara and Oliver, who enter a relationship in isolation, but the seemingly innocent love is, in reality, intended manipulation driven by secret identities and a shared past.

Ciara seeks revenge for her brother’s death, and Oliver is on the run from his past. The two are consistently suspecting and playing games with one another to the point that a murder occurs.

9. The Couple Next Door

The dark romance in this one is less about love and more about toxic addictions, infidelities, and suffocation. Evee and Pete’s relationship is tested when she suffers a miscarriage.

But the affair she has with their neighbour, Danny, shortly after, puts the two neighbour couples on a path of lies, manipulation, and secrecy. This is particularly evident when Evie becomes pregnant with Danny’s child and develops an obsession with him, wanting to leave Pete.

8. Doctor Foster

This 2015 drama series takes real-life relationship problems and gives them a darker twist. The story of ‘Doctor Foster’ focuses on Gemma, who discovers her husband’s infidelity and seeks to expose him.

While it’s not essentially a romance, the relationship between the characters continues through patterns of emotional and physical abuse, bullying, and psychological warfare throughout its two long seasons.

7. Midnight Mass

In ‘Midnight Mass‘, romance isn’t the main focus, but it still plays an important role in the story. Father Paul’s connection with Mildred Gunning is hidden and never meant to happen. Those feelings don’t go away, though.

Over time, they accumulate and begin to affect his choices. His desire to give Mildred another chance at life and to hold on to what they had pushes him in the wrong direction.

6. Penny Dreadful

This shows love in a dark, unsettling way, just as its gothic setting does. The series brings classic horror with a mystery storyline, but the relationships seem quite different, and not in a good way.

Vanessa Ives, Dorian Gray, and Ethan Chandler are all troubled in their own ways. When they come together, their relationships feel intense but also very unhealthy. There’s attraction, but there’s also control and obsession. The supernatural side of this makes everything even darker.

5. Behind Her Eyes

This one uses the love triangle arc to blend psychological manipulation. Louise gets pulled into the world of Adele and David when she has an affair with David.

Adele befriends Louise in a soft, approachable guise, but she hides sinister intentions. The show steps more into the unhinged territory when Adele uses astral projection to swap bodies and retain control over David.

4. Hannibal

The series is based on Thomas Harris’ novels, in which Hannibal is a forensic psychiatrist who eats people. The story brings an FBI agent, Will Graham, into the picture, who turns to Hannibal for help in catching a serial killer without realizing that Hannibal himself is the one he’s searching for. As they continue working together, Hannibal slowly begins to influence Will, showing him how he thinks and sees the world.

Over time, Will gets pulled deeper into Hannibal’s reality. The lines between right and wrong begin to fade, and even something as disturbing as being served human flesh becomes part of that change. Even when Hannibal frames Will for murder, he still manages to twist the situation in a way that makes Will question everything.

3. Killing Eve

This series brings together an assassin and the woman chasing her. Even though it starts as a hunt, it quickly turns into something far more complicated. Eve Polastri and Villanelle get pulled into each other’s worlds; it’s intense, unhealthy, and impossible to ignore.

Soon, the lines between hunter and target don’t stay clear for long. That tension peaks at the end of season one, when things finally spill over. After a moment that feels almost like a confession, Eve stabs Villanelle. Walking away never seems like an option.

2. Tell Me Lies

The dark romance in ‘Tell Me Lies’ has little to do with murder and more to do with toxic patterns in a relationship. Lucy Albright and Stephen DelMarco are college students who enter into a relationship that grows increasingly chaotic over the course of eight years.

Their relationship is built on addictive tendencies, gaslighting, and betrayals that Stephen and Lucy employ on each other. While these patterns are pretty consistent, they surface early in season 1’s ending. Stephen is revealed to be the cause of the crash that leads to Macy’s death and still manages to manipulate Lucy to be on his side.

Joe Goldberg’s character is psychotic, and that’s what makes him so unsettling to watch. His idea of love is twisted, intense, and completely out of control, and he somehow convinces himself that everything he does is justified.

That’s exactly what pushes him to force his way into Beck’s life, hold her captive, and eventually kill her. But what happens when Joe finally meets someone who thinks exactly like him? That’s where Love Quinn changes everything. Their relationship moves fast, gets chaotic, and suddenly, all those “rules” about right and wrong just don’t exist.
