‘Family Guy’: Is Stewie Griffin’s Character Queer?

Stewie Griffin‘s sexuality had always been a mystery in ‘Family Guy’. Although his queer jokes were evident to Brian and viewers, writers chose not to reveal his sexuality till the sixteenth episode. At the beginning of ‘Family Guy’ Stewie hinted at being queer when he preferred to cross-dress and went to gay bars. His knack for world domination and matricide could be understood, with the pressure of being a closeted gay.

Eventually, Stewie grew out of his bloodlust and violence as he became more comfortable with his sexuality. Writers, initially, had scraped the idea of revealing Stewie’s sexuality to maintain the suspense and awkward jokes on homosexuality. However, they addressed the topic in season sixteen when Stewie went to a therapist.

In season 16 episode 18 titled ‘Send In Stewie, Please’ of ‘Family Guy‘, the child is hinted at being fluid. Stewie is sent to see a child psychologist when he shoves a child. The hour-long episode gets into the details and roots of Stewie’s desire for violence and his sexuality. Seeing Dr. Cecil Pirtchfield, Stewie is inspired by him. Pirtchfield is a gay psychologist in a relationship with a younger man.

The child reveals, “Fluid” is something I hear being tossed round a lot now.” However, he does not confirm his queerness, “but I’m confident in my heterosexuality. That’s a word, right?” Nonetheless, this is the closest Stewie has come to talking about his sexuality.

However, the showrunners shelved the idea to maintain the suspense and humor of Stewie’s mysterious queerness. The episode was planned to air in season four.
