‘Game of Thrones’ Aegon Targaryen Spinoff Is Being Treated Like “History” Similar To The Legends Of “Napoleon or Alexander the Great”

Game of Thronesremains one of the most beloved franchises of our times. Though the show ended a long time ago, numerous reboots of the fantasy tale are keeping the fans’ spirits high. With the franchise now poised for Season 2 of the prequel series ‘House of the Dragon‘, fans are eagerly awaiting its release.

While the upcoming season is sure to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats, that’s not all. Earlier this year, the production team of the show announced that Mattson Tomlin, the writer of ‘The Batman, would be developing another prequel of the ‘Game of Thrones‘ franchise, focused on Aegon Targaryen’s life. He has now seemingly revealed some details of the prequel.

Mattson Tomlin’s upcoming prequel of ‘Game of Thrones‘ focused on Aegon Targaryen has high hopes riding on it, given the proven brilliance of the writer. HBO’s iconic show will thus come with yet another part of the series that promises to delve into the conquest of Aegon.

The writer recently opened up about the upcoming prequel and what fans may expect from it. Tomlin stated that the show is still in its early stages, while also revealing some details of the story in relation toFire and Blood‘, one of the parts of George RR Martin’s books on which ‘Game of Thrones‘ is based.

That one is very early days where I’m currently writing the script, currently doing a lot of great back and forth with [creator] George [R.R. Martin],” Tomlin said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “In speaking to George, it became really clear, ‘This is history, treat this like it is what happened,'” he added.

Interestingly, Tomlin likened the story of the show to those of historical conquerors like Napoleon and Alexander the Great.  He also stated that though he may be following the story in the books, he aims to expand on the conquest in a significant way. “Unlike the original series, I don’t have thousands of pages to go off to adapt. I’ve got a couple hundred that I’m really focused on, and in those pages of ‘Fire & Blood,’ there are a lot of clues,” he explained.

It kind of turns into doing Napoleon or doing Alexander the Great or doing some great historical figure where we know a lot about the guy. We know where he was, we know who he conquered, we know who lived, and we know who died,” Tomlin added.

Further delving deeper into his thought process about the show, the writer, Mattson Tomlin said, “That all becomes the plot, and then it becomes my job to go, but what did it mean thematically? How did it feel? What were the emotions when this person died and this person lived? We don’t have the context. We don’t know what anybody said.”

The prequel based on Aegon Targaryen is one of many spin-offs in the works for the storied franchise. Despite the original series’ success suggesting boundless potential for expansion, HBO has remained selective, ensuring the quality of each spinoff. This approach means some projects, even those with pilot episodes, might not make the cut.

Given that the Aegon Targaryen series is in the early development stage, it may be years before it graces our screens. Fans will have to be patient as the world of Westeros continues to evolve and expand. Fortunately, ‘House of the Dragon‘ has received acclaim from both viewers and critics, and can cater to the fans need until then.
